オーストラリアの友達と再会！ 2015年の3月にアデレード出張で会って以来、約2年ぶり！ その後いろいろあったので何かそれ以上の時間が流れている気が。彼らはイタリア、フランスを旅行した後来ていたが元気だった！ 一緒に自然史博物館に行こうとしたが、建物の外に大行列ができていて、人が多すぎて断念。代わりに向かいにあるセントラルパークを散策した。セントラルパークは1 km x 4 km くらいの大きな公園。都会のオアシスでした。当然ながら湖は凍っていた。気温6F、つまり－14.4C。雪はめったに降らないオーストラリア出身の彼らよりも、私が先に「寒すぎてこれ以上はムリ」となり、長くは外を歩いていられませんでした…。彼らはどういった防寒対策をしているのか？！
その前にエンパイアステートビルを見に行った。かつては世界一の高さを誇るビルだったので有名。映画 Sleepless in Seattle にも出ていて、懐かしかったな。でも、例によって行列。ロビーに入るのは無料なこともあり…。朝9時半に行ったのに。ほんと観光地だな。上の展望台に登るのは60ドルとかしたはず。6000円ですか。高すぎ。いくら眺めが綺麗と言っても…家族４人とかで行ける人たちすごいわ。世界が違うというかなんというか。巨大都市、観光産業、ビジネス街もあるし、なんかすごいね。今回、大都市を観光して回るのがなんか疲れる…と思った。寒さのせいか、ごみごみした人口密度のせいか…。研究室の友人（かつてニューヨークへ車で４年間通った経験あり）が、「ニューヨークから戻ってきてほっとすると思うよ」、と言われたが、まさにその通り。車で移動したい…笑
After giving up to go into the Museum of Natural History due to too a long waiting line of people under 6F or something, we went to explore Central park just across the road. Central Park is a huge park in the middle of the metropolitan city, measuring 4 km in length and ~1 km in width. It is nice to see trees, lakes and rocks after a long subway ride, which was quite crowded. The temperature, however, was too low to enjoy walking around for a long time! My Australian friends were not so cold (!), but I was almost frozen. I think they dressed very properly with many layers of sweaters and socks.
Skyscrapers are tall. The Empire State building, one the tallest one in the world, was so big that I could not see the tip of it from the bottom of it. Again, there was a huge crowd waiting outside to go in. It is free to enter to the lobby, which is on the ground floor, but it cost $60 or something to go up to the top. It's a rip off! I bet the view is good, but I do not want to spend that much just to see more tall buildings.. Anyway it was good to view it just form the street. It was a bit tiring to see hundreds of tourists anywhere maybe because of the cold weather, and/or crowd. Where's my personal space? My friend in the lab told me that I would be happy to be back, and it was certainly true. I am very happy to live in my brand new, clean apartment on campus with lots of open green space, and be able to drive around, do not have to take the packed, stinky subway (oops).

白人のほうが平均体温が高く、日本人より寒さを感じにくいと聞いたことがあります。ホントかな？
私はこちらに来てから、寒さには結構強くなったようで、
震えている夫を「ハワイ出身でしたっけ？」とからかっていますけれどね。
Sakuraさんのお宅のセントラルパークも素敵ですよ。夏の野外クッキングは最高でしょうね。
ReplyDelete白人の方は、冬でも信じられないくらい薄着していたりしますよね。体格が大きいので体積に対する表面積が小さく、外気温の影響を受けにくいのかもしれません。羨ましい限りです。旦那さんは、寒がりのようですが・・・^^;
