Fireworks!!

忘れかけていたロンドン旅行記。
新年の深夜は花火が上がるんだけど、結局疲れてホテルに帰り、生中継をテレビで視たという話。一人だったし(^_^;) 花火の後の地下鉄はすごい混雑で、帰るのに2時間かかったとか聞いたし、地下鉄で喧嘩もあったと新聞に書いてあったからまあいかなくても良かったかな。翌日は朝早くにパリ行きの電車に乗る予定だったし。元旦の朝は予定入れないのが正解だった。あーまたヨーロッパ行きたい！ 気候の良い時に行きたい！(今！ 夏だ！！)

I thought I like traveling alone, but I'm getting lazier year by year, and feel like to have a company more especially when I go to a country where I have no friends. I was planning to go to watch New Years' firework display on the riverside, but I felt too tired in the crowd.. The tube on the way must have been packed! (An American lady who sat next to me on the way to Paris said she had waited for 5 hours in the fireworks viewing venue and it took at least an hour to go back to the hotel by subway after that!!) I went to bed with the alert set at midnight. The celebration was broadcasted live on BBC, and it was still amazing. Happy 2014!
The last one seemed more like a massive explosion..!

Miscellaneous stuff in London そのほか面白かったもの

のりまき…　普通におしゃれなスーパー（M&S）で売っていた！　はしが付いてくるんだろうか。それともフォーク？　むしろ手？？
Japanese rolls!! Never expected to find them in a supermarket -Marks & Spencer- in London! Do they come with chopsticks? A folk? Or should it be eaten very traditionally- by hand?

オックスフォードストリート駅を降りるとそこは、買い物エリアだった…。すごいショップの数。いかにもヨーロッパな建物に、現代的なお店が入っているのが面白い。セール時期とあって、すごい人だった。物価が高いので、セール価格でやっと普通の値段だなと思えるくらい。。。
Oxford street is the centre of downtown London. Big shopping district with theatres and restaurants here and there. The main street was lit up nicely. January is the month of sale, and everywhere was packed with people. Because prices are twice as much compared to Japan, things looked like normally-priced only when they are on sale...

ホテルの写真。最終日だけ青空を背景に写すことができた。ガーデンビューホテルというだけあって、目の前に公園がある。ただし、公園を見ることのできる部屋（シングル）は超狭い。窓を見ても分かるけれど、部屋幅もほとんど、窓の幅ほどしかない！　これがイギリスの標準なのかは、よく分からない…。アパートもこんな広さだったら滅入るだろうな…。
My hotel~ Garden View Hotel in Earl's Court! You can see the garden -Nevern Square- from your room, but as you can see from the width of the windows, each room facing the garden is so small! So I picked a twin room on the opposite side for more space.  

そこで、公園には面していないけれど、ツインの部屋にして、そこは広くて快適だった。もう一つのベッドはスーツケースを広げるのに役立ったし。値段もほとんど変わらないし。オススメです！
I think I made a good decision. I was able to use the other bed as a table, and the room was much more spacious and comfortable! The price was almost the same. Great deal if you don't care about the garden view.

Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, British Museum, Tower of London, Tower Bridge, and lights!

Strolled around famous sites that reminds people of London despite the rain and strong wind!

バッキンガム宮殿、ウェストミンスター寺院、大英博物館、ロンドン塔、タワーブリッジとそこから見えるライトアップされたビルたち！　素敵過ぎるーー　ロンドンらしい風景を満喫しました。暴風雨にも負けず。。

Trafalgar Square and National Gallery トラファルガー広場とナショナルギャラリー

お昼は美味しいタイ料理を食べた！　イギリスでもアメリカでも、タイ料理は人気があって美味しい。ちゃんと本に載っているお店に行くのがコツだと思う。はずれがないから。その後はロンドンの中心地、トラファルガー広場とそのすぐそばにあるナショナルギャラリーに行ってみた。閉館間近だったけど、すごい人…。大晦日だったし、人々は午前0時に上がる花火まで時間をつぶさなくてはいけなかった。雨も降っていたし。ギャラリーは本当に大きくて、60部屋くらいあって、1700年代のイタリア、といったように分類されていた。天井がものすごく高くて、建物自体が芸術品だ！！　

After a delicious lunch at a Thai restaurant, I went to national gallery to see paintings. The gallery itself was huge and gorgeous. There were numerous rooms, each of which was with a country and an era specified, (Italy, 1700s). The paintings were gigantic as well.

これはホームズの家の近くにあったリージェンツ公園。公園の域を超えているというくらいに、広い。なぜか中に大学まである！！　一周しようかと思ったけど、2時間くらいかかりそうなのであきらめる…。

タイ料理店でも、新年を迎える飾り付けになっていた。

建て物がいちいち美しくて、歩いても歩いても飽きないわーー。赤いバスもアクセントになって良い感じ。

Sherlock Holmes museum!!

久しぶりの旅行記。
ロンドンは観光客でいっぱいで、地下鉄、観光スポット、ショッピング街などは大混雑してましたという。。おまけに暴風雨。そんな第一日目でしたが、二日目は曇り空に小雨だけ、だいぶましでした。雨が降ろうが絶対行きたい！と思っていたシャーロック・ホームズ博物館に朝一でいってきました。博物館が開くのは10時だったので、9時半に着くように地下鉄に乗った。
ホテルの朝ごはんは食パンのトーストとジュースまたはコーヒーという簡素なものだったので毎日はいいや…と思い、近くのコンビニでアラビア風？クスクスとマメ煮を購入。クスクスは超小粒のパスタで、マメとかピーマンとかとカレー味で炒めたもの。意外にすごく美味しかったので大満足。

シャーロックホームズ博物館は、9時半だというのにもう人が並んでいて、それでも前日に見たよりは列も短かったのでとりあえず並んでみた。路上での喫煙は、本当にやめてほしい……。アメリカ人は話し方で分かる！　この博物館は妙なシステムで、10時になってまずショップが開き、そこで入場券を買って再度ホームズ博物館に入るために並ばなければならない。結局同じ順番になるだけなのに、なぜ二度も並ばせるんだろう。数人のスタッフしかいないんだから、仕組みを変えようと思ったらすぐ変えられそうなのに。

ともかく、ホームズとワトソンが下宿していたと言う部屋を拝見。寝室→リビングみたいな部屋（ここでホームズが依頼人の話を聴いた）→3階のハドソン夫人の部屋という具合。物語の通りで、これでもかというほどに再現していた。さすが本場は違う。パイプとかバイオリンとかはもちろん、化学実験が好きだったホームズの趣味のフラスコとか、書いた手紙とか勲章とか。本当にここに住んでいたんじゃないかと思うくらい、寝室もガウンもリアルだった…。ここまでいくとマニアもすごい。中学生の時に、全シリーズ読んで、訳者の古風な日本語と紳士的なホームズがすごく好きだったので、念願叶ってよかった！！

そういえば、ここでもそうだけど、日本人をよく見かけた。たいてい、女性二人旅。やっぱり、ガイドブックに載ってる定番の場所に行くよね。私も含め。写真撮ってあげたりした（笑）。

ショップではホームズ関連グッズがまた半端じゃない量売っていて、良いお値段で、良い商売だなあと思ったり。イギリスの物価高は半端じゃないのに、それにさらに上乗せされている！　それでもけっこう多くの人が、40－50ポンド（現金なら、日本円にして8000円から10000円だ！）遣っていた。。しっかり負けずにTシャツとチョコレートを買ったりしたけど。。

ホームズお部屋見せてもらいました。ありがとう。ちなみにホームズが現代に生きていたらどんな活躍をするかというのを描いた「シャーロック」というTVドラマがイギリスであってて、話題らしいというのを後で知った。だから人が多かったのか？！　ちょっと俳優さんは若いと思うけど…。

So, I woke up at 7 am, tried Arabic (?) breakfast, and went to Sherlock Holmes museum 30 minutes before its opening time. There were already about 20 people waiting outside. Standing there was much easier because it was cloudy. No rain, little wind.

A bit perplexed at the system where you have to wait in line to buy a ticket at the shop and queue up again to enter, the 221b Baker Street reconstruction was just as I had imagined. I liked readings Sherlock's stories a lot when I was in JHS, and have been dreaming of visiting the museum some day. A dream came true!

Props were very real, too. Holmes' pipes, the letters shot "VS" on the wall, chemistry books he liked to read, the bronze medal that was given to him to honor his contributions to Scotland Yard ... It was interesting to see things from Victorian Era. It was well worth getting up early and waiting!!

　

"Tube" of London ロンドンの地下鉄

ロンドンの地下鉄は工事がけっこう行われていて、別の線を使ってくださいとか、代替でバスが出てますといった掲示がされている。私の泊まったホテルの最寄り駅も、2線あったんだけど、そのうち一つは工事中で閉鎖されていた。今年150年を誇るロンドンチューブ(本当に筒の形だから「チューブ」)、保守管理は欠かせないようだ。次はこの線とこの線が使えなくなります、といった予告もあった。150年前って、日本は江戸時代...。車すらなかったのに、地球の裏側では地下に電車を走らせてしまう国があったとは。

チューブに乗ってて面白かったのは、方角を知っていればすごく乗りやすいということ。電車の線が縦に伸びていて、現在地から見て南の方にある場所へ行きたかったら、southboundのホームへ行けばいい！ 普通だったら、このホームの列車は最終目的地がここだから、この方向に行くから、よし、目的の駅を通る！ と確認しないといけないが、ロンドンでは地下鉄の路線図を見た時点でどのプラットフォームに行けばいいかわかる。混雑防止の観点からもとても便利。もっと多くの国で採用してもいいんじゃないだろうか。地下鉄があまりにくねくねしていたら使えないかもしれないけど。もちろん、プラットフォームには通過駅も書いてあるので二度確認もできる。

2言語で書いているのでペースは遅いですが、一日一記事くらい旅行記を出したいな〜

The tube District line was closed due to engendering work, so I went to Buckingham palace on another line. It's funny they call the subway "tube", but you'll get it if you see it. The tunnel and the trains are tube-shaped, and the both ends of the train are curved and shorter. Tall people can hit their head against it. I wonder why they didn't make it square. Because of some technical limitation at the time it was constructed? Surprisingly, the tube is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year. No wonder there's constant engineering work going on and planned ahead.

It was another surprise that I had to know whether I was heading to north or south, or east or west. The platforms are marked as Eastbound or Westbound etc. It seemed troublesome at first, but as I got used to it, I found it more convenient. You have to be sure about the direction you are going anyways, and find the right train that goes to that direction. The convenient aspect is that you don't have to find the train's last destination on the map, which is often difficult. Whether you want to go north or south is the only thing you should know, and you'll be on the right platform to wait for the right train! Very clever! I think this system should be introduced in other countries so that tourists can easily find their way.

Touristy area on the stormy first day

The weather was quite bad. It was rainy and windy like a storm. I wouldn't go out in this weather if I were at home.

Anyways I went to Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, but it was so stormy that I couldn't walk outside much. And there were so many tourists everywhere forming a long queue in the entrance of any famous tourist sites. Hundreds of people were waiting to enter Westminster Abbey despite the heavy rain, and the queue stretched outside the church property into the road.

Feeling a bit overwhelmed, I went to Sherlock Holmes museum, where people are waiting in line for 100-200 meters again in the strong rain and wind!! Madame Tussord, the famous wax doll museum was even more crowded...

Disappointed, I headed to British museum with my friend. By the time, the rain stopped and even there were some sunlight! Such a changeable weather. The museum was crowded with a lot of people waiting, but we didn't have to wait that long as the queue was steadily moving forward. The exhibitions were impressive with lots of things I've seen in history textbooks. Egyptian ruins that was taken by France and given to UK.. It reflects the history of invasion and occupation... And there were displays of things from 3000 years ago, mainly unburied from tombs. It's interesting that ancient people had this bull figure (to display?) and terra cotta cups which are almost the same as what we have today.

Because it was so rainy, there weren't many chances to take photos in the morning...

Vacation time!!

On the way to London via Seoul. It started snowing heavily just before we took off from Incheon, so it was delayed for 40 minutes. I'm glad the flight wasn't cancelled! Asiana Airline provides good service and good meal. The aircraft is Boeing777 equipped with personal screen with variety of entertainments including audio book. This is helpful to me as I don't watch films with the small screen (too close!).

I was a little bit concerned taking a Korean airline after Prime Minister Abe's Yasukuni visit, but the travelers and cabin attendants are normal. The Korean couple sitting next to me is very friendly and nice. The woman even taught me how to eat the Korean inflight meal, which was very tasty! Now I remember Korean food is so good.

We flew near Beijing and above somewhere in Mongolia, and the Sunset made everything invisible from the window. China's big. Never had I seen the vast, brown land before. And it made me imagine how cold it is there and what they do for living. There seemed to be no grasslands or trees. Interesting.

ロンドンへの一人旅。初めてのヨーロッパ！！ 昨日まで実験してたとは信じられない。ソウル経由でアシアナ航空を利用しています。アシアナ、初めて利用するからどんな感じかと思ってたけど、快適。スターアライアンスのマイルもたまるし。機内食は韓国料理がとても美味しかった！ 葉っぱの上にごはん、牛肉の焼いたもの、味噌っぽいペーストを乗せて巻いて食べるサムギョプサル(でいいのかしら)がすごく美味。味噌ペーストはナッツが入っててすごく複雑な味だし、牛肉も味がついてて、それがご飯と相性良くてパクパク食べられる。キムチもついて、やっぱ韓国料理美味しい。
スクリーンが各シートにあって、映画も音楽もある。ありがたかったのはオーディオブック！ 本の朗読をしてくれるもので、英語の勉強にもなって一石二鳥。ワイン入門があったので聴いてみて、仕事を思い出してしまったけど(^_^;)

首相の靖国参拝もあって、タイミング悪いなあと思ってたけど、日本人も韓国人も空港関係者も皆普通だった..まあそうだよね。隣に座った韓国のご夫婦も親切だった。機内食の食べ方も教えてくれたし。

12時間のフライトのあと、到着！ 暗くて基本的によく見えないけど、住宅地っぽいところ。mansionって書いてあるから、高級住宅地かもしれない。お部屋はそれなりに広くて清潔だった！^_^
