ニューヨーク一日目。 NYC day 1.

寒かった…早朝出発だったので －20Cの中家を出た。空港まではバスを使ったけど、「そこまで道路状況は悪くないので予定通りの到着です」とのこと。まあ確かに前日雪は降らなかったけど、ツルッツルですけど…。雪国の人はすごいなあ。バスの中が全然暖かくなくて、みんな凍えてた…零下の車庫から出てきたばかりだったら、当然ですね。。フライトも予定通りで、何事もなく到着。

ニューヨーク市内は、まあ予想していたけど、人が多い… 地下鉄が古い。汚いと聞いていたけど、まあそこまでではない。もちろん日本ではなく、アメリカの標準からして、ですが…でも臭いがきつい駅はあった。地下鉄運賃は2.75ドル！！高いーー！　レストランも、すべてが高い。さすが世界一？の大都市。大都市だから多少は気温が高いかと思ったけど、それでも－6Cくらい。歩き回るのがあまりにつらかったため、追加セーターを買いました。初のセーター二枚重ね。旅行シーズンで、観光客が多い。みんなよくこんな寒い中観光して回るねえ…自分も含め。私はオーストラリアの友達が来るので会いたかっただけで、ニューヨークじゃなくてもこの季節じゃなくても良かったのですが…。

まず最初に、イラスト美術館に行きました。こぢんまりながら四階建てで見応えがありました。ペンと色鉛筆や水彩で描かれたイラスト。シンプルな道具でこれほど凝った絵がかけるとは！勉強になりました。一方でデジタル画というものも多かった。たしかに、表現の幅が広がる…。芸術家といえどパソコンと離れられない運命なのね…。。

そして、吉兆庵、日系スーパー、大戸屋をはしご。さすが、日本のものが充実している！！　吉兆庵では和菓子がたくさん！　草餅を買いまして、とても懐かしかった。おもち類が食べたくなるこの季節。他にもようかんや団子類やもち菓子などあり、値段は日本の倍近くでしたが繁盛しているようでした。日系スーパーもほぼ同じで、クリームパンやアンパンといった日本のパンや、ありとあらゆる弁当とおにぎりが。うわーーすごい！　ここの近くで働いてたら、しょっちゅうお弁当買いに来るわ！　食料品も狭い店内ながら充実しており、いりこ、千切り大根（懐かしい！！）、高菜と辛子のパスタソースなんてのを買いました。う、嬉しい…！

そして、大戸屋。17時半開店とあったので、17時20分に着くともうすでに一人待っている人が。「検査があっているようで、開店が遅くなるらしいよ」と教えてくれた。寒空の中、いつになるか分からない開店を待つのは正直しんどかったけれど、どうしても大戸屋に行きたかった…ので待ちました。その後も、ぞろぞろとお客さんがたくさん。17時35分には開店したけど、その時には既に20-30人くらいの行列が。人気なんだ！　店内はけっこう広く、みんな座れて良かった。お目当ての、黒酢あん定食をいただきました！！　ごはんも美味しい。きっと日本から取り寄せているのだろう。大満足です。象印の炊飯器を使っても、ごはんがなぜか日本で食べるほどおいしくない…のはきっとお米が違うからだと思う。ごはんの味の違いをカバーするべく、混ぜご飯レシピを勉強しないと。

スマホの電池が切れる寸前だったので写真はありませんが、ニューヨーク市立図書館にも行きました。お城と見まごう外観。中も広く、展示がたくさん。ここも観光客でごった返していた。入場無料だし、トイレもあるしね…。予備の充電器すらも、充電器れ。低温のためだろうか…。そんなわけで半日だけでしたがけっこう充実しておりました。

It was freezing cold when I left Michigan with temperature at -7F, which is -21C at 5:30 am. It's no joke. My car was frozen, and it took a while to scrape off the ice and get going. The bus ride to the airport was alright, and so was the flight. It's just impressive how they function normally under this cold weather.

But it was very cold in New York city too around -6C. I couldn't believe it! I felt what I'm wearing wasn't enough, so I had to buy a sweater to add an extra layer just to stay alive. 

I first went to the Society if Illustrators, a museum with lots of illustrations. It was inspiring to see many artwork drawn by a pen. But I also found many that are digital images. You need to use a computer for everything. It certainly enriches your technique, enabling things that you can't do by using a pen. Though it's tempting to go for digital drawing, I'm happy with traditional pen and paper style because drawing is my hobby, a way to relax and stay away from a computer that I already use so much. It motivates me especially when I look at a drawing made just by using a pen and colour penciles. I have exactly the same tools, so it's all up to me to reach this level of excellence in drawing. It was inspiring! 

Then I went to a Japanese sweets shop, Kiccho-An, where I bought kusamochi. It's really a time of year when I crave for sticky rice cakes. I'm glad to have rice cake filled with adzuki bean paste. Yum!! 

My dinner on this day was one of the highlights - Ootoya! I've missed this typical Japanese teishoku so much!! It opens at 5:30 pm, and I arrived there at 5:20. There was already a person waiting, saying that they'd open later today because they had an inspection. I was pretty determined to eat there, but it was very cold to wait outside even for 10 minutes... Fortunately, they opened at 5:35. There were many people lining up already! I'm glad people appreciate Ootoya! I had sweet and sour chicken, their specialty teishoku that I missed for a long time. Very satisfied. 

The next spot to go was Sunrise mart, a Japanese grocery store. They had lots of bento, onigiri, using etc.. Many Japanese people were shopping as well as non-Japanese. I'm happy that I was able to buy some groceries I can't get in East Lansing!

There's no picture, but I went to NYC public library too. The building was gorgeous like a palace. It reminded me of the museum of London. It was super crowded,but people scattered around as the inside is huge with many rooms of exhibitions.

Frozen but satisfied, and I did a lot in 4 hours!!
