蒸し暑い..!!
ずっと涼しいところにいたせいなのか何なのか、異様に蒸し暑くて頭痛がひどい。晴れては雨がふり、また晴れては雨が降るので、高温多湿もいいところ。集中力がなくなる…。
室内温度は30℃、湿度80％で、電気のありがたさが身にしみます。こんなに夏は暑かったかしら。

Highlights in Canada
Lake Louise- lovely water from glacier, light green and cold. Cozy hotel in front of the lake where wedding ceremonies are held.

Conference- very informative and fruitful. So many projects going on, and so many people from different background participate. Breakfast and lunch were great, with barley soup and salad,
Calgary Stampede- amazing rodeo, cute little cowboys. Tried poutine (Canadian snack) and found it OK. They use cheese curd instead of cheese. Big horses and cows in the venue. Pearling machine was also displayed to promote food barley. Farmers have a meeting lounge where they can have a drink and exchange information.
Campustower suite- very spacious with a kitchen and separate bedroom. Three times bigger than my apartment. Staff was very nice and helpful.
Pampa- an "all-you-can-eat" steak restaurant, Brazilian style. Chicken, pork, beef and lamp. They grill large portions of meat and show them to you. You can eat it, or you can say no and wait for another one to come. Passion fruit moose was fantastic! Salad was also good with passion fruit dressing! Alberta has cowboy culture, and that's why they have stronger crave for beef.
Meeting- so many things to discuss and lots of new action plans to take. I thought Canadian participants would like us to make a clear decision regarding the new varieties we get from this project. It'll take long to assess what kind of components are important, but it's not an excuse for being indecisive for so long. The more serious they get into this project, the more responsibility we have to get involved and make good use of the results of their effort. A no brainer. I sometimes feel bad about it. Are we 100% willing to employ the results that we achieve together with them? It's going to be a huge database and statistical analysis, and even though it's a funded project, the aim of this study is to introduce something new to Japan.
VON'S- gorgeous steak house. Raw oyster as an antree, gout cheese steak, and cream brule. Everything was fancy and delicious. So full. It's common to bring their spouse to a business dinner.

Economics
Free trade agreement
It might be difficult for them to reach an agreement, because Japanese government is trying to support agriculture and fisheries industry by maintaining the high tariff. If they agree to eliminate tariffs, Japan will see an increase in imports of cheap food and products from other nations. What will happen to the local industry? The government will have to come up with a new means to support the farmers. In order to make agriculture more competitive and profitable, they have to increase the scale of their business. Small land will only give small quantity of crop, and small amount of profits. Considering the fact that tariffs on motor vehicles and machinery are already very low, there won't be much benefits that Japan will give out of this trade agreement.
Negotiations are going slowly, though. Bilateral agreement is already difficult to materialize, how much more for multi-lateral agreements? Each country has its say and tries to maximize the benefit it will get out of the treaty.
It seems like "being a friendly nation" is used as a strategy to promote free trade treaty. It sounds so noble and attractive when one country says "We enjoy close economic relations. Why don't we further enhance our economic relationship through trade agreement? It will bring both of us prosperity and growth." It looks like there's no reason to deny this generous and friendly offer. Custom-free trade will sure affect primary industries in Japan, and it will discourage people to business in agriculture.

Out of Japan: 8-16 July
Off to Calgary, Canada this Sunday. A symposium, meeting, farm-visit are the primary objects. Also, there'll be a festival of cowboy that starts this weekend. I hope to have some time to look around. The weather looks promising, but with higher temperature than average. It'll be better than in Kyushu because the humidity will be low. It seems like we are being steamed.. Mold grows everywhere and it's so troublesome!
