Work progress and Green Revolution by Dr. Norman Borlaug

Watched Norman Borlaug - The man who tried to feed the world on PBS. He is a plant breeder that developed dwarf, fertilizer responsive, high-yielding crops that increased grain productivity in developing countries in 1960s.  This revolutionalizing improvement is called Green Revolution. Though it is criticised for its intensive chemical fertilizer and irrigation use, he developed plant breeding methods that are standard operations in today's world.

Unfortunatelly, the world population is still growing, and despite Borlaug's miracle crops, hunger is still present in many parts of the world.  "The food problem in the world has two aspects - one is production, and  the other is poverty and low purchasing power of the population in some countries."  The inequality in distribution is a deeply rooted problem in almost every society where the economy is liberated.  Those who have more get more, and the cycle perpetuates.

It's obvious that the Earth cannot support 50 billion people.  No way.  It's not the matter of plant breeding, but it's more about how to slow population growth. There is not an easy answer for it.

The last snowfall of the season I believe will come tomorrow! Printed out my tax forms and scanned an extra copy of them, ready to stay inside all day.

Lab meeting presentation done!

The only time I needed to present this academic year!  Again just like the night before my oral exam, I had to write down scripts, read some related papers, and add some finishing touches to my slides.

There were about 40 slides because I added some more that explains the basic consepts of my genetic study so that my collaborators from Engineering will also understand my talk.  That was a great thing to spend time on.  Totally worth it.  Appreciate positive feedback from the Engineering professor!

I got to talk with one of my labmates after our the meeting was concluded. I really appreciate it that he always gives me advice and help with bioinfomatics! I got some new codes to try.  I hope it will work out for me.

Positive, flexible, and cheerful attitude helps greatly when you give a presentation. You want to be your best self so that your audience will be engaged and find your talk (and the person who is delivering it) interesting. It is a comprehensive presentation of you as a communicator!  Getting up 2 hours before and rehearsing my presentation gave me energy to get going smoothly.

Giving a presentation is a lot of work, and it makes me super nervous, but it is at the same time the best part of being a researcher.  It is a great feeling when I get good questions and helpful insights from others. It feels like my researech is meaningful and I want to continue my effort.

Update delivered!

The feeling of being able to show what I did right away when asked about my progress in analyses. Mmm!

After one week of working remotely, it really felt like "Oh, this is my workplace. I need to do my job and get results here." It didn't take that long to get used to it, well because I live alone with no children around at home, although I'm a bit worried about my communication.

Meeting with myself for a meeting

One of my former labmates was having a "meeting with himself" before a busy day starts when he was doing a lot of things. Now I understand how it feels! I need to keep track of everything and a time to sit down and plan what to do is a precious moment for productivity.

https://cookpad.com/recipe/1000316
