Another tour to Beppu

Too tour to Beppu round 2 with four friends from Fukuoka and Singapore. I appreciate the ten-year-long friendship. We went to see devil's pools and hot spring crystal production sites.

The steam coming up from everywhere in town was pretty surprising to them, it seems. So was the fact that a lot of households have their own hot spring pipeline, just like normal water or gas supply. I grew up in the neighboring city and am quite used to it, but their excited smile reminded me of the awe.

It was a little too early for the most dominant variety of cherry blossom, but we were able to see another one full in bloom.

It became rainy and sunny many times on that day, making the locals say the sky is as busy as they are (during the peak travel season; on Sunday, spring break for families and graduation holiday for graduates).

We had s wonderful time! Hope to see them again soon. And it's the end of March. A quarter of the year is done (!)

Penfolds in Adelaide

Penfolds winery has produced their signature red wine Grange for more than 50 years. It's popular to get the wine of the vintage of your birth year or your child's.

The prices vary depending on the quality of each year and also how long it was aged. The older, the more expensive. The one that was produced in my year was $900!

Its not a cheap brand, rather, it's a special wine for infrequent opportunities. It's a nice way to celebrate something.

The city view was also good from the winery on the hill, as well as the brick buildings where they make and bottle the wines.

Trip to Australia

Also met up with some good old friends there after a year. It's fortunate that we were able to keep in touch and remain friends. One of them cooked the mashed potato-looking snack to share. Its curry flavour was very good!

Every time I come to Adelaide, I want to live there more and more.

Happy Saturday

Had a wonderful day with so many fun & pleasant activities. Thai lunch (too hungry to take a photo), Beppu park with some flowers blooming, a free mug at Godiva after buying a gift, and choir practice!! The mug is very artistic and lovely. Giving a gift is a wonderful gift to yourself, too!

「英国オックスフォードで学ぶということ」/小川百合

読書記録。

願い事は必ずかなう。その言葉通り、彼女は奨学金を見つけ、英国オックスフォードへと旅立った。オックスフォードの頑固で真面目な教授、勉強熱心な学生たちと共に講義を受講し、芸術とは、哲学とは、文化とは、についてどう思考すれば良いのか（学問とは、問いについて考える方法を学ぶことであって、その答えを教えてくれるものではない）、自分の人生でなすべきことは何か、じっくりと考えている。

彼女の筆致はとてもきれいだ。淡い優しい色彩で描かれた物語を読んでいるよう。それでいてオックスフォードの灰色の佇まいが鮮やかに思い浮かばれるから見事だ。きらきらと光る夏の日はもちろん、鈍色の空がずっと遠くまで続く雨の日でも、彼女の生活は発見と、思索と、初めてのものに驚き喜ぶ少女のような可憐さに満ちている。

彼女の本職は絵描きだが、その経歴は変化に富んでいる。30歳頃までデザイナーとして会社員をしていたが、自分が本当にしたいことは絵を描くことだと気がつき、一念発起して仕事を辞め、国内外の美術館を巡る旅に出たあと、山にこもって絵を描こうとした。印象に残っているのは、彼女は仕事で毎日のように絵を描いていたのに、ふとそれがなくなって、100％自分のために絵が描けるようになったとき、自分はなにが描きたいのかさっぱりわからなくなったということだ。仕事で必要な課題をこなすだけでは、主体的に何かをしたいと思うことが難しくなるらしい。

天からの贈り物と彼女も自認するオックスフォードでの学びが、細かく丁寧に、慈しみをもって綴られている。なんて充実した留学生活だろう。彼女のために「準客員研究員」などという肩書きを「でっち上げ」、彼女が自由に講義聴講と図書館巡りができるよう計らってくれた学長の言葉「我々のようなものに存在意義があるとしたら、それはあなたのような人の役に立つためですよ」、それにオックスフォードの学問に対する姿勢がよく現れている。

姿勢を正して、本を読んで、物事について考えて、世界を広く深い目で見つめなければ、と思わせてくれる本だった。久しぶりに、二回通して読んで、良かったところを書き写しまでした一冊。

春の再会！

タイからの友達と別府観光ー
予習の甲斐あって、かなりスムーズだった。よかった！ 梅と寒緋桜を見れた。寒緋桜は花弁が多くて詰まっていて、花も集まってぎゅうぎゅうな感じで、まるで花束みたいだった。すべての花が下を向いているので写真が撮りづらいことこの上ないが...、下から見上げると無数の花束が目の前に並ぶのもまた良し。

7年ぶりとは思えないほど、2人とも何も変わっていなくて、話が弾んだ。話好きで感じのいい人は一緒にいてとても居心地が良い。天性の性格かしら。研究者とあって、日常会話に科学用語が出てくる出てくる。「あれって何だっけ、なんかコロイドみたいなやつ」とか、「フィンランドでは熱い温泉と冷水に交互に何度も入るんだって。」「それって体に良くないんじゃない？」「うん、E. coliのヒートショック処理みたいよね」とか。爆笑してしまった。

実に楽しい早春の１日だった。ぜひタイに行かねば。

博多のお土産に、明太子パンをもらった。行列ができてて、みんな明太子パンを買っていくというお店らしい。私がいた頃はなかったな。すごい美味しい〜〜 コップンカー(ありがとー)

Unbelievable...

I couldn't believe my ear. A junior high school teacher doesn't grade properly, and the scores his students receive are full of (intentional) mistakes.

That is already astonishing, but moreover, he just sneers at the students who come to him to complain. He just says "Time's up. There's no way to correct your score." What. Of course there is a way to correct the score if there's a mistake!

It seems he gets a distorted pleasure by having a full control of the students' grade. How nasty! Isn't a teacher supposed to be a good example to the students? Some told about this to the principal and other teachers on a higher position than him, but nothing happened; on the contrary, the teacher poorly treated the students who complained. #$'%?!?!

Grade matters to the students. The teacher may have various issues in his life, but he must be professional. It's appalling how unreasonable and unjust it is, and how inactive to errors the whole system is. Is there anything that can be done?

ある中学校教師が、テストの採点を超適当に行い、点数は間違いだらけ、言いに行っても「時間切れー、もう点数は入力してるから直せない。」とせせら笑うらしい。直せないわけ無いだろう。ふざけるなー！

絶対わざとやっている。生徒の点数を増やすも減らすも自分次第、という歪んだ快感を覚えているのだろう。そうでなければ「あ、ごめん！」と言ってすぐに訂正してくれるはず。

学年長や校長に言っても何も変わらないらしい。どう見ても正しい解答をしてるのに、点数も修正されない。他の先生に言った子は、今後その先生からさらなる意地悪をされるらしい。何が起こってるの？ なぜそんなのがまかり通ってるの？ 組織の重い病な気がする。

「タイで大の字」

漫画家のさおりさんとそのダーリン、トニーさんの旅行記。

前々から興味のあったタイのことがいろいろとよくわかってとても勉強になった。ちょうど今週末、大学の研究室に来ているタイの研究者の方と会うので、ネタになりそう。タイ料理を習いたいーー。

タイの人々の心には仏教の教えが根付いていて、施しをすること、善行を積むことはよく行われるそう。だから、東日本大震災の時も日本に多額の援助をしてくれたそうだ。なんと高尚な。

タイ料理だけでなく、象に乗って散歩したり、仏壇（のタイ版）を作る工房で体験してみたり、児童保護施設のような「子どもの家」を訪問したり、普通の人が行かないようなところによく行っているお二人。面白い。

しかしもう結婚して子供もいるからなのか、「超憎たらしい」とか、（キックボクシング体験でサンドバッグを蹴るときに）「これを私だと思って！」とかいう発言が見られるのが面白い。ダーリンは外国人英語版の時は、付き合い始めて同棲を始めるくらいのときの様子が描かれていたので、初々しいというか、お互いを様子見しているようだったが、今は夫婦の共同生活も手馴れたものらしい。その中でやはりストレスやケンカもあるのだろう。その変化が面白かった。

Beppu tour

Did a rehearsal of Beppu tour I am supposed to go with my Thai and Singaporean friends on separate days. My mum was wiling to showed me the roads and good sightseeing spots. I read a Beppu tourist map for the first time!

いちのいで会館 serves lunch to their spa visitors. So, when you finish taking hot Onsen, what's waiting for you is this nice-looking lunch! The Onsen water was light blue and beautiful.

Then we went to a viewpoint on a hill, where we could see the mountain side of Beppu with a lot of steam going up. It looks like as though fire was occurring in many places at the same time. But nothing's burning :)

Rehearsal was really a good idea... I'll be less clumsy on the day, hopefully.

Leap in Life

It's the season of commencement. Flowers start blooming and trees budding.

Something reminded me that nothing stays forever the same at workplace. People come and go.

There is time to have to say goodbye, and some things may come to a sudden end. Even if you think it will be forever, it may not. It is understandable, and it happens regardless of our understanding of it.

So, take your own path, stick to your ideal, and cherish the people whomever you get to know in your journey.
