送り火 Okuribi - the end of Obon holiday

 This weekend was Obon holiday, where your ancestors come back to your house and spend a couple days with you, the living ones.  Bonfire is made when the spirits are coming back on day one and also when they are going back on the last day of the holiday.  Got to see Okuribi on the five mountains in Kyoto, where bonfires are made in the shapes of letters and symbols, which have specific meanings.  Later I read that this is also to calm the spirits of soldiers and others who fell in Kyoto, as this old capital became a battlefield quite often throughout the history. 

It was pouring an hour before, but it stopped raining just before the ritual took place, thanks to the kind weather (and probably our ancestors wanting to travel without getting soaked).  I'm not religious at all, but I like this time of year to fondly remember the deceased and be thankful to be alive.  

五山の送り火を見てきました。場所を下見した甲斐があって、よく見えた！　直前にすごい豪雨があったのに、開始時には止んで、予定通り点火された。こうやって天候が味方してくれることが、けっこうあるらしい。大雨の中、火床でスタンバイしてた方々、ほんとにありがたい。送り火保存会はボランティアだというし。何百年も続く行事だそうで、ご先祖だけではなく、昔々から戦場だった京都に彷徨っている魂の成仏を願うのも、大きな目的とのこと。なるほど……！！　さすが歴史ネタごろごろ、京都。帰省はしないでおいたので、お盆らしいことができてよかったー。

シンガポールの友人から聞いたのだが、翌日早朝に、この燃えた木を拾って持って帰るひとがたくさんいるらしい。玄関に飾って魔よけにするそうだ。知らなかった。当日は山に立ち入り禁止なので、翌朝日の出と同時に、って感じだろうな。さすが…。

知恩院。未だに行く機会が…。 京都の真ん中にありすぎていつでもいけるわって思って行ってないパターン。 Chion-In temple. Haven't been there, though I've always wanted to, because it's in the middle of Kyoto, always accessible, always there...
