This American Life - Transformation

This American Life - Transformation

Listened to a really interesting story of animals on This American Life, Public Radio International. First one is copy right of photos of monkeys that they took by themselves by pressing the camera button that was set up by a photographer. People used the image for free because they think that it was the monkey that the copy right of the picture belonged to, and that animals do not have copy rights, therefore the image is public, free to use for anyone, not a property of the photographer. It was brought to court. The argument and similar cases were kind of bewildering, but interesting to listen to.

Then the second story was about two women who wanted totally different types of transformation - one wanted to be a mother, the other wanted to be --- a horse. Why horse? Because she was tired of being obligated to a lot of things that humans all have. So she got injections to change her human body into horse body. There is a company that provides that "service", which is irreversible. Her arms and legs became horsey, and she trots and gallops. And her emotion becomes more wild, expressing fury, anger, rage without hesitation, followed by violent rampage. She and the other lady who became pregnant, were not able to be roommates anymore. After a full transformation to a horse, she will retain human brain, can think and feel, but she will slowly lose the senses of humans after living in the pasture grazing day and night. Is it a glorified version of suicide? She asks the company that provides transformation service - they answer: on the contrary, it is a new birth. New beginning.

Life is not easy sometimes - but do you want to get rid of your human self and transform into a horse, and graze and trot in a pasture for the rest of your life? I cannot imagine that kind of life, but it felt so real, made me think of what it means to be a human being. Well written story.
