The big three, pizza, and U of M

safely made it to Detroit after 11 hours of flight. It is the furthest I have ever been. The weather has been lovely and comfortable so far.

On the way to Chicago, I met an Indonesian girl who is about to start a job as a assistant language teacher in Hawaii. We found that we are at the same age and talked about many things for quite a long time. She was so friendly and kind, easy to talk with so time passed faster.

On the day one, we went to Downtown Detroit, and saw the big GM buildings, car exibition, the river that runs between Detroit and Windsor, Canada. A lot of workers were eating lunch outside during lunchtime. We had buddy's pizza, a square-shaped, Detroit style pizza. It was very tasty!! I like the crispy bread and slightly sour tomato sauce. Then Ann Arbor, the big campus of university of Michigan. U of M has a very long history, old buildings and tower. The area was huge. Grasses and trees were beautiful. We went in to the library and saw the stack of books. It make me want to learn.

図書館三昧。なぜもう少し早く図書館通いを始めなかったのか…？！　USAに来てから、2年くらい図書館に行ってなかった。（来てすぐのとき、一回初めて図書館に行って、マンガを読んでいるのを会社の人に目撃されたから、なんて言えない。笑。）　2年間を取り返すべく、二週間ずつ10冊借りている今日この頃。借りた本を一覧にしたレシートをくれるのだけど、それを見ていると自分がどんなことに興味があるのか良く分かる。誰かの貸し出し本一覧なんかを見たら、とても面白いだろうなと思う。

でも10冊全部最初から最後まで読んでいるわけではない。

面白くなかったら、途中でやめてしまったり、読みたいところだけぱらぱらっと読んだり。それでも、貸し出し無料だから、心おきなく読まずに返せるところが良い！！　図書館すてき。長時間のフライトに備えて、面白そうな本を何冊かとっておこう。

革命前夜？

あまり時間がないけど、変えるべき因習にメスが入っていることが嬉しい！ことを報告。

「今までずっとやってきたから」「皆やってきたことだから」といったような思考停止の言い訳がまかり通り、それに従わざるをえなかった状況から、自分たちでこれはおかしい、これはこうしようと進められるって、とっても良い気分。だいたい、目的自体が意味不明だ。現状を直視しようとせず、古いやり方でやっておけばとりあえず昔のままで、文句は言われないだろうというただそれだけの理由で、こんなに古いものがそのまま残っているのか。異文化経験でもしている気分だが、異文化経験ほどには気楽でもない。しかしそれがついに変わろうとしている。

嫌悪して遠ざけるだけではなく、内側に入り込んで中心部に切り込んで、初めて起こせる行動もあるんだろう。人生の教訓になっている気がする。

この調子だ。いけーー！

Productive Monday

Today is a super productive day! I finished making a skirt from a one-piece, translated a one-page introduction of a scientific paper and had it checked, and wrote two emails. Everything went as planned, although it feels like still at work with a tight schedule.

Today I assembled an old computer and tried to copy data from a floppy disk (FD!). Someone said: "Oh, I thought that kind of thing (dealing with computers) was something that only men can do." It's a woman who said that! It shocked me how deeply sexism is rooted. The way she said so suggested that she had believed it since childhood. I remember my grandmother was saying something similar. Of course not. Women can sure do tecky things, and a lot of them do! I'm not going to criticize her opinion, but that kind of idea fosters sexism and eventually inhibits women's freedom and opportunity. If a women is happy to stay home, cook and clean, it's OK. But it doesn't mean that all women are like that. There are so so many things that both man and women can do!

スカート

着なくなったワンピースからスカートを作ってみました。こういう細かい作業好きー。
ミシンがあればもう少し縫い目はきれいかな…(^_^;)

レトロな喫茶店はるるでかき氷。紅茶ミルク味が、珍しくて紅茶とバニラアイスが絶妙で素晴らしい！ 美味しかったー
そして気の合う友達とたくさん話せて嬉しかった☆
