The biannual meeting of Bean Improvement Cooperative was a very informative session. It was a nice, friendly community who all love beans.
What was impressive was how good beans are. They help the environment by nitrogen fixation, provide 300 million people with vital calories and nutrients, and have health-promoting effects. There's no downside to it; that's a very important characteristic in this era where we need to consider the burden we are putting on the environment by producing food. When we want to realise a complete, sustainable cycle of agriculture, legumes play a critical role.
There was a lot of research going on on disease resistance and agronomic yield, but there was some studies that looked at quality traits and nutrition. I want to take part in improving the end use quality such as coking time, flour and paste qualities. I'm very lucky to be able to do my project! It encouraged me a lot! It's a humanitarian work to improve beans.
