Visited Nijo jo castle for the first time in a decade!
It's the place that saw both the beginning and the end of the Edo period. The buiding inside has many rooms that served different purposes. The Tokugawa Shogun stayed here when they visited Kyoto from Edo, the capital. The wall paintings, wooden complex carvings, ornamental doors and tassels, decorative metal nail covers... all are explained in detail on boards along the way, which are quite interesting to read.
It is touching to imagine that Shoguns met feudal lords here in this room 400 years ago in the main room (Ohiroma). All people are gone, but the buildings are still here, quietly withstanding the time test, well, most of them. 400 years is a long time, but at the same time, it is just 400 years ago. It's a blink of an eye compared to the history of the earth or the universe. Yet, we've gone through drastic changes since the 1600s. It's hard to imagine 400 years from now. How will everything be? Probably not imaginable things will be happening, just like us living a totally different life that the people in Edo period had never imagined.
