新潟県は佐渡市に、太鼓のお祭り Earth Celebration を見に行ってきましたーー！ 佐渡島の小木という小さな港町で、毎年行われているお祭りで、外国からの参加者もまあまあ見かけた。この小さな田舎町に、巨大なのれんや祭囃子や野外フェスの舞台が設置されて、すごい気合の入ったお祭りだった。
佐渡島では至る所で太鼓活動が行われている。鼓童というプロ太鼓演奏集団も、佐渡島をベースとしている。鼓童の演奏は初めて聞いたけれど、めっちゃくちゃレベルが高い！ 野外のコンサート会場に響き渡る太鼓の音。笛や琴、三味線や謡曲まで一人何役もこなす。もちろん全て暗譜、太鼓奏者が何人もいて指揮者もいないのに、一糸乱れぬ太鼓裁き。鼓童大ファンの友達がいて解説してもらったのでより深く楽しめた！ 鼓童はメンバー住み込みで寝食をともにし、野菜やコメ作りもしながら、全国ツアーで太鼓演奏をしている。二年の研修生生活、そして、その次には二年の準メンバー生活を経て、正式メンバーとなり、呼吸まで、魂のレベルで一致団結した太鼓のプロ集団の一員となるそう。それはもう軍隊に近い。何人もいるのに、メトロノームもないのに何であれだけ揃うのか…「他の人の太鼓の音を聴きながら、千回練習する」、と元メンバーは言っていたけど。聴いてから対応しても間に合わないのでは、と思うけど…。あのレベルの一体感、たどり着くまではものすごく大変だろうけど、確かにやみつきになりそうだ。それを考えると、合唱団、楽譜もあって、指揮者もいて、なぜ揃わないんだ(笑)
鼓童は全世界ツアーもやっていて、開催日と開催都市が長いリストになっているTシャツを着た、外国から来たであろうファンの方もいた。すごいなーでも、ファンになるのもわかる。
めっちゃ楽しかった…たくさん笑い、たくさん語り。幸せです。
一緒に行った友達の一人は、最初コンサートのチケットを買っておらず、「会場外のレストランにいるよ。外から聞いとくし」と言っていたけど、私たちは「ここまで来てーー？！後悔しませんかーー？？」と、太鼓ハラスメントを実施(笑)。結局、一緒に来ることになっていた人が来れなかったのでチケットが余っていた人がいて、安く買えたので、三日三晩、三人一緒にコンサートを楽しむことができた！ 台風のおかげというかなんというか。フェスとか初めてだったな、暑くてどうなるかと思ったけど、楽しめてよかった…感謝感謝。
Three of us went to Sado City in Niigata Prefecture to see the Earth Celebration, a taiko drums festival! The festival is held every year in a small port town called Ogi on Sado Island, and I saw not only Japanese tourists but also a fair number of visitors from abroad. It was a large scale festival in this small country town, with multiple event venues, various artistic performances, and a main concert on an outdoor festival stage.
People seem to routinely practice Taiko as part of the culture on Sado Island A professional taiko performance group called Kodo is also based on Sado Island. This was the first time I saw Kodo perform, but it was obvious that the level of their performance was extremely high! The sound of taiko echoed throughout the outdoor concert venue. Each player plays multiple roles, from flute and koto to shamisen and chants. Of course, they memorize all the pieces, and even though there were several drummers and no conductor, the drumming was in perfect unison. Andrea is a big Kodo fan, and she explained the performance to me, which made it even more enjoyable! How can there be so many people and how can they be in sync without a metronome... "We practice a thousand times, listening to the sound of other people's drums," said a former member. I don't think you can respond in time after listening... That level of one-ness must be extremely difficult to achieve, but it must certainly be addictive. Thinking about it, the choir, with our sheet music on hand, with the conductor...why can't we get it together? Lol
Kodo is also do worldwide tours, and there were some fans who must have come from overseas, wearing T-shirts with a long list of dates and cities of Kodo's previous concerts. I can see why they would become huge fans and come all the way to Sado island to watch them play taiko live.
It was so much fun...lots of laughter, lots of talking. I'm super happy I took this trip! Revisiting memories to be continued!
