Research fruit farm and organic farm at Clemson

We visited Musser Fruit Research Center and Organic Research Center at Clemson University as a post-conference tour.  They do a lot of research to tackle fungal diseases because   Being near the ocean, farmers in SC face diseases due to high humidity.  They mainly work on peaches, but they have persimmons and plums, too.  It was inspiring to see such passionate researchers and students!

The vast grounds, the quiet environment, and the leaves falling so abundantly that you could almost hear the onomatopoeia in the text, "Gasp, gasp, gasp"!  Ah, how nice to be in nature!

My favorite quote from one of the grad students: "Plants don't eat cookies because they're too dry (good one!); plants need water to absorb nutrients."

Falls Park on the Reedy

Downtown Greenville has a waterfall with a suspention bridge where pedestrians can overlook the waterfall.  It is a very nice park to take a walk in.  Autumn leaves were beautiful, too.  I got to see a good friend of mine that I met in Michigan!  She is living in SC now, and it was a miraculous reunion for both of us!  She is the one who drove me to the airport when I moved out of the US.  At that time, we both thought we wouldn't see each other again in person.  But what a happy surprise.  We had tacos for early dinner and had a wonderful time chatting on the outdoor seating facing the river.  I value our friendship!

Cactus tacos!

Shrimp tacos

On the right, the brick building used to be a carriage factory, and in the back is an outdoor event venue.  What a reflection.

She gave me such a wonderful gift... Custard's Curated Curiosity Box, where, the gift giver tells the shopstaff about the recipient, and they will pack a gift with the recipient in mind.  Very interesting, and I love all the items they packed!

Greenville SC

Greenville, SC is a beautiful place to stay with lots of good restaurants, lovely red brick floors, and plenty of nature.  There are many historic exhibits on the streets.  Westin is an old and classy hotel with European-style decor.  There were live piano concerts on the first floor in the evenings.

Travel was long, but very smooth both ways. This trip was so worthwhile beacuse it was very nice to see new and famiiliar faces of my fellow bean researchers at the conference.  I highly appreciate the friendly, cooperative atomosphere of the community.  My presentations (oral & poster!) went alright, and I got inspiration and motivation for future work.  All good!

Multitasking = prioritizing tasks and doing a single task one by one

Key points:

1. Break a goal into tiny, doable tasks and check them off one by one.

2. Ask for feedack when you think a task is ~60% done, then improve it based on feedback.

3. Put your emotions aside and focus on one task in the present moment.

4. Have some room for additional tasks.

----------------------------

Multitasking is kind of a myth.. or is understood poorly because it doesn't necessarily mean doing two or more things simultaneously, but prioritizing tasks and focusing on one task at a time, while watching progress of several goals. I have found so far that planning each week works for me. In other words, I plan things that needs to be done in 5 days, so that I give myself a little freedom and flexibility on what to do on each day. Here is how it's done...

1. Make a list of what needs to be done (goal) in that week. 2. Break the goal into smaller, doable tasks. 3. Prioritize them. -- The highest priority ones are those that need other people's input. Write a rough draft and ask people for feedback then modify, instead of trying to perfect it in the first go. -- The second highest priority ones are those that you don't know how long it'd take to finish. Need to start early and ask others for help if necessary. -- Things that I can do by myself have low priority. 4. Focus on the task of highest priority first. Do not think about other tasks for now. 5. After one task is done, check it off on the list and start the one of second highest priority. For example, if your goal is to apply for three jobs (company A, B, C) this week, and you like company A the most, B the second, and C the least, then your tasks would be:

- Do some research about company A - Update my resume based on the job description at A - Write a cover letter for A. - Do some research about company B - Update my resume based on the job description at B - Write a cover letter for B. - Do some research about company C - Update my resume based on the job description at C - Write a cover letter for C And try check off all the items within a week. "Do some research about A" is something you can do by yourself, but you need to do it first in order to write your resume and cover letter, so this comes first. Then, write your resume, send it someone for their feedback if you'd like. While waiting for them to reply, you can start writing your cover letter for A. You may need to edit it based on the feedback you will get for your resume, but still you can create a Word document and type in names, addresses, and some typical phrases that a cover letter usually has. Get the task going, even just a little bit. The key for not being overwhelmed is to break your goal into very tiny pieces of actions and to focus on one at a time. One task could be to create a subfolder for company A in your job application folder; to create a Word document; or to come up with one sentence that describes why you like the company you're applying for. The more check marks, the more motivated you feel. If you couldn't apply for the 3rd job in the week because it took time to apply for the first two, it's OK because you did your best. You can have a realistic plan for the following week (e.g. apply for 2 jobs). But keep in mind that you may be faster in the following week and could finish 3 because you've already done it several times. In that case, plan to apply for 2 in the following week, do your best, and if you could apply for 3, that's a great bonus, and it can be incorporated into your future planning. It's a good idea, though, to have some room for unexpected and urgent tasks that come in during the week, like preparing for an interview or preparing additional documents upon request.

Asking for feedback is not a problem, do it as often as possible. After all, all your jobs are to satisfy your clients' needs, and the more feedback you receive, the better you can meet your clients' needs. (Applying for a job is kind of meeting a clients' (employers') needs.) Don't be disappointed by negative feedback, it's a chance for you to improve yourself, so stay positive and just make whatever adjustments necessary to get things done.

---------------------------

Be kind to yourself, stay focused, don't get overwhelmed by negative feedback. Take a deep breath and think what has the highest priority to achieve all the goals in time. People are there to help you.

Good luck will follow, I trust!

Psychology to look deep into yourself

● Is it a dependent relationship, or truly intimate one?

In an intimate relationship, you will be happy when the other person is happy in a world not directly related to you. For example, when your partner ate steak at the company dinner, you'd feel happy that they had a good time with their colleagues.  In a symbiotic (dependent) relationship, however, you'd feel jealous and do not like it when the other person is happy in a world that is not directly related to the two of you.

How would you tell if you are in a dependent relationship with someone you are close to right now, or if you are truly in a close relationship?  If deep down you feel helpless and frightened to live but yet make yourself look strong, or if you are trapped in a sense of disappointment, you are in a dependent relationship.  Also, the world of those who live in dependent relationships are relatively small.

Do not flaunt affection directly, but express it indirectly.  Because to express affection indirectly, it is necessary to understand the other person's needs.  Just saying "I love you" in an intrusive way or to giving the other person things that you think are good for them does not require understanding the other person's needs.  However, making efforts behind the scenes to obtain what the other person likes, for example, can only be done if you are truly thinking about the other person.  True love is the kind of love that can be given by trying to understand the heart of the other person, by being close to them, and by thinking about what they need right now.

● We can desire "what we truly desire...

When we recognize and release our repressed feelings toward our parents, we think we have achieved a psychological detachment from them.  However, there are a great many people who think they are separated from their parents, but are still dependent on their own spouses.  The parent-child relationship has changed, but nothing else has changed.  So the next thing to think about after releasing emotions from repression is how to satisfy one's own need for affection. Then you will get serious about what kind of person you want to associate with. 'My parents have been denying me, so I should look for someone who won't deny me,' etc.

The first thing to envision is "yourself who has fulfilled your desire for affection".  Let's think about what we should do to achieve that goal.  You are not alone.  Mr. Teizo Kato, the author of "The Psychology of Self-Realization," also said, "I had to keep my father in a good mood all the time in my childhood, so my first requirement was a partner with whom I did not have to try keeping their good mood.  I myself had a very difficult time [with unfilfilled needs].  I had to remind myself of the following as I was going through healing: "There are many emotionally mature people in this world.  There are many people in this world for whom showing goodwill to others is a joy.  There are many wonderful people in this world."

When we are young, we assume certain things about ourselves 'without any evidence.  For the child, there is some basis for that assumption, but as an adult, it is evidence that lacks objectivity.  A child's thoughts are a child's thoughts.  As an adult, you can free yourself from the child's belief that you are unlovable.

If you grew up with unfulfilled needs for affection as a child, you must resolve to be your own primary understanding and to be genuinely kind to yourself.  They must decide for themselves that they are worthy of living, and it is OK to do so.

Confidence does not come from what others think of you.  There are people who enjoy life and feel stable all the time, even if others don't think so highly of them.

Time only flows forward.  It cannot be turned back.  But, because of that, it can be forgotten and left behind.  If we could go back to the past, we might become trapped in constantly obsessing over which past to change, and we'd end up spending our precious present time trying to alter the past.  In that case, the inability to return to the past might be a blessing.  Because there are no U-turns on this one-way road, we can keep facing forward.  Looking ahead, slowly and steadily, embark on a journey of self-care, envisioning a fulfilled self.  Bon voyage!
