Niigata 10 Civil engineering in Edo to fight flooding..

My Niigata friend is a person who did a lot of research on Niigata, so it is interesting to listen to his stories.  I guess everything can be interesting when you get deep down to it.  He drove me to a place facing the sea on Niigata Island to enjoy the sea breeze.  Then he gave me a ride to Minatopia, the Niigata City History Museum, which is otherwise kind of inconvenient to get to!  Niigata is, after all, a car-based society.  At Minatopia, it was very interesting to see the history of Niigata's struggle to control the rivers and flooding.... In particular, during the Edo period, the Matsugasaki ditch (?) was built to divert rising water of the main stream of Agano river, but it could not withstand the rising water pressure the following year, and the water of the Agano River swept the ditch away, making it a tributary.  A half-year's construction work was just gone in one flooding, changing the topography. The civil engineering technology of wood and stone in the Edo period was no match for the strength of the river.  We've come a long way since then, for sure.
