Hanging out with friends at Mumokuteki cafe

Mumokuteki cafe serves vegetarian dishes and has a shop selling organic, natural-themed foods and goods.  It is a huge place, but was quite crowded!  Super popular restaurant, it seems.

Eight of us went.. talked about Harry Potter, reading novels in foreign languages, how hot it gets in summer in Kyoto, and which to choose, go bouldering now and pay 500 yen more, or kill 3 hours until it's a regular price.  I supported the former, saying time is money, but the other said time is money only when someone will actually pay for it.  That kinda makes sense, and we drifted to another topic.  But re-thinking about it now, I still believe time is money and it's better to go now, get it done, and go home to get more things done.  That way, you will temporarily lose 500 yen, but you will have 3 hours to do whatever you want to, including activities that will lead to potential jobs, new skills and so on.  So, you will be buying 3 hours for 500 yen, which is a great deal, and future you will thank you for that.  I think the heat is quite getting to me.. It took this much time and brain power to reach this conclusion.   I must admit, my brain's quite affected by biking in the sun.  Gotta rest well and be careful not to get dizzy spells again. 

Everything in the garden is rosey! - 中之島バラ園とドイツカフェ

Rose garden is in bloom - an oasis found in the middle of Osaka city with 2.6 million people. 🌹🌹 Also visited a fancy German cafe, which made my day!

バラの描き方の取材でもありました

Fleischkase ... ham-like, boxed shaped meatloaf-kind of food.  Everything was so tasty! And the presentation was fantasitc! フライシュケーゼ。直訳は肉チーズだけど、チーズが入っているのではなくて、形がチーズっぽいかららしい。チーズというよりは…食パンにみえる？？

バウムクーヘンもtk氏のを半分いただきました。しっとりできめが細かくて美味でした…。

確認、確認、また確認

先日、寝る間際にボスから私が以前発表した論文について、ここのデータとここのデータがちがうのはどうして？という質問が来て、心がざわつく案件だったのだが…、「問題があるとわかってから悩もう。そうしよう」と自分に言い聞かせて、平静を保つことができた。そしてよく寝た。以前なら心配すぎて今すぐ見てみないと気が収まらない！となっていたけど…そして夜が更けるパターン。メンタルの扱い方がだいぶ上手くなっている気がする。結局、計算方法が違うので違って当然のものだった。心配事の9割は起こらないというのはわりと本当かもしれない。

論文出す前に何度も何度も確認しているので、重大な問題ではないだろうとは思ったが…。いや～しかし、ドキリとしますなあ。データ解析手順が複雑すぎて、間違いがあってもそのまま進むことがある。ので、手を変え品を変えしらみつぶしにチェックしないと…。良いリマインダーでした。

This is indeed an interesting experiment, and I would be curious to see how it will turn out. But as a non-traditional student and former industry employee, I would think isolation risk outweighs the benefit of being exposed to an industry environment.

Private companies are often a closed community with limited interaction with outside researchers. So, it is a privilege to be in an academic community as a graduate student because there are so many PhD holders and experts in various fields whom you can talk to without much worrying about confidentiality and trade secret.  Seminars, workshops, library resources, and all kinds of support for graduate students are also something that you hardly (or at least less often) have access to in the private sector. Last but not least, friendship with your fellow graduate students provides you with learning opportunities and motivation. Being a "PhD student" based in the industry is giving up all those benefits, to me. An internship or two, however, would be a wonderful way to take a look at how the world outside academia works.

Of course for those with established connections, it may not matter as much, as somebody else mentioned.  Indeed, this system may benefit industry researchers more who seeks a higher degree.  In that sense, it is meaningful to add an option to work and study at the same time while being in the industry, since sometimes graduate school straight out of undergraduate is not a choice for some students for various reasons. 

英会話・攻撃技「私を褒めて」・フィッシュカレー

English Language Exchange に参加したー　もう半年もたつのか。毎回来る人がちがう時もあるけど、顔見知りも増えて、楽しい集まりになってきている😊

日本のことが好きで日本に来た外国人に囲まれていると、外国人はみんなそうなんだ、とつい思い込んでしまいがちなので要注意だな…。それは、アメリカやヨーロッパと違うところじゃないかなと思う。欧米には、文化が好きとかではなくて働くため、稼ぐために来ている移民の人が相対的に多いだろうから。 

待ち時間に少しカードゲームをした。プレーヤーごとに違う特殊な技で攻撃するというやつなのだが、一人が、内容を読む暇なく慌ててカードを出し、「私をほめて☆　ほめないとダメージ２。」という技を繰り出した！！　そのひと、初めて来たので誰も何もその人のことをしらない…しかしダメージを受けたくないのでみんな褒め言葉をひねり出す。無理やりひねり出された褒め言葉を浴びる彼女、「恥ずかしい、いやだ～～」と悶絶。傍から見ているとかなり面白い図であった…。それにしても、みんな、ちゃんと考えてのことなのか何なのか、かわいいとかきれいとか、外面に関することを言わないのはえらいなと思った。大事なことだよな…。物理的に何かを触って遊べるカードゲーム、いいね。

そのあとインドネシア料理を9人で食べに行った。インドネシア出身の人が、故郷の味が恋しい時に食べに行くそうなので間違いない！　とても美味しかった…。そして、友達ってやっぱり良いなと思った。ここでは、長期的な人間関係が築ける可能性が高いので嬉しい。週末までにためた social energy を使い切って満たされた…！　夜は涼しかったなー。

Indonesian fish curry!  The bones were there, but they were soft and edible.  I'm impressed how delicious it was!! Definitely want to come back!  

新緑の法然寺

新緑の法然寺も有名みたいで、インスタによくのっている。

少し遠くて行きにくいところにあるので、そういうところはやはり空いている。

いきなりすごい坂に出くわすが、短いのでホッ。

苔がたくさんあって、緑の香りが豊か。

山の麓の寺といった感じ。住宅街に囲まれているけど、不思議。

ガラスのオブジェ。何個もあった。

不許葷辛（くんしん）酒肉入山門。葷辛とは、においの強い野菜や辛い野菜で、仏教では避けられる。なるほど。ネギ、ニンニク、玉ねぎ、ニラ、ラッキョウなど。おいしいやつばっかりやん……。特に玉ねぎは魔法の野菜と思っている、すごく風味がよくなるので。玉ねぎは煮たら甘くなって辛くもくさくもなくなると思うんだけどなあー

寺巡り、心が落ち着く。動的な瞑想とでも表現しようか…。

新緑の瑠璃光院 Ruri koin temple

友達のインスタを見て行ってみたいなと思っていた瑠璃光院。新緑の綺麗な時に行けた。念願かなってよかった。

河原でバーベキューしている人たちがいた。デイキャンプというやつか…涼しくて蚊もまだいないだろうし気持ちよさそう！　宇佐やミシガンでみんなでワイワイやってたなー懐かしい。

瑠璃光院は静かで、暗さが新緑の美しさを増していて、庭が苔むしていて美しかった…。兵士が壬申の乱（672年）の傷を癒やした釜風呂まである。釜風呂は、本当に窯業用のような釜で、地面に筵が敷かれて、ちょっとした枕があり。サウナの原型か…？

ちょっと怖い。。

写経するところもあった。写経用紙とボールペンまでもらった！　写経はなぞるのではなくてお手本を見て自分で書くものだと思っていたけどまあいいのか？　それにしても、絵馬もそうだけど、住所氏名願い事を書いて出すって、寺や神社にけっこうな個人情報渡してる…よな………。

Visited Ruri Koin temple.  The trees were vigorous and lush, making the whole area slightly dim.  The contrast of dim light inside and the bright light green outside.  The temple was quiet despite many tourists.  A gleaming black table was placed just at the right place where it mirrors the young maple leaves.  Just trees and a desk could produce such a beauty?  Visitors were all in an awe, including me.  There is a primitive form of sauna in the building, too, which injured soldiers dropped by and rested in A.C. 672.  There was a place to hand-copy Buddhists' mantra, a practice similar to prayers, continued for over hundreds of years.  Too many tourists now to focus on anything spiritual like that there, but it was interesting to look at those mantras and let my imagination time-travel.  

誕生日お祝いデー☆☆

tk氏と新緑の瑠璃光院を見に行ってからの、魚たちの決闘？に遭遇しつつ、ピタパンサンドを鴨川のほとりで食べ、りりー氏生誕祭をしました！　ワインオープナーとスパークリングワインの保存用栓をもらった〜嬉しい！　大切に使わせていただこう。珍しくいろいろ作って見る気になったので納豆卵焼きとか卯の花とか出した。色んなものを少しずつ出すのに便利そうな三連皿ほしい！

Visited Ruri koin temple to view lush greenery, came across a duel (?) between fish in Kamo river, and had a picnic with pita sandwich from an Israeli restaurant, then we threw a party for my birthday!  What a fantastic day!!

シンガポールの友達からもらったサンバルチリソースで料理。美味しかった…！　マレー料理だそうな？　でもインドネシアでも使うとか。

5/15はシルバーの誕生日。近い！おめでとうシルバー！

と思ったらシルバーがお祝いしてくれた！！！　ありがとうシルバー！！！　誕生日が一番近いキャラが祝ってくれるのかなと思ったら、プロフィールのお気に入りに登録してたキャラが祝ってくれるらしい。誰を登録したかすっかり忘れていたけど……　ともに祝えて光栄だよシルくん。
