Family hiking!

家族で山登り。
車で山頂付近まで行ってそれから散歩コースという内容。小池、大池などぐるっと散策したら結構いい運動になった。3時間歩いた後のうなぎの美味しいこと☆ 楽しかったー

久しくアートっぽいものに触れていないので禁断症状が。楽しすぎる(^ ^) 早くいろいろ終わらせて歌ったりピアノ弾いたり絵を描いたりしたい。

Issue Topic: Technology and a Thinking Reed

As people rely more and more on technology to solve problems, the ability of humans to think for themselves will surely deteriorate.

Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.

I agree with the statement that the more dependent people become on technology, the ability to think will deteriorate. That is already ongoing and affecting people's basic skills in life.

The biggest contributor is the development of the Internet. It has changed the way we search for information and think about a certain topic. Before the age of the Internet, people had to look for information from limited source available to them, and form a hypothesis on their own. For example, you read a news article saying that the suicide rate is steadily decreasing for the past several years. If you wonder why, you need to go to the library for very technical books and think about several possible reasons for yourself. There was no other way unless you have an acquaintance who is an expert in that area. On the other hand, it is most likely that people rush to the Internet and find the reason for the decline. They would think for zero moment because it is simply a waste of time if they could find a likely "answer" on the Internet instantly. The process of thinking is taken very lightly with the technology.

Another example is automation. In factories or office, a lot of procedures are automatically performed by computers or robots. As a result, workers tend to forget how the individual steps in the system works, or even, what the whole automated system is for. The technology may have brought apparent convenience and efficiency, but the workers' decline in active thinking is its serious side effect. Even with the latest technology of automation, problems and errors still occur, and it is human workers who have to deal with it. Lacking regular habit of thinking for themselves, troubleshoot might be a difficult task for them because the machines and computers they usually rely on are all out of order.

The points mentioned above are widely seen in any industry or household. It is ironically showing that the complicated technology is making humans less intelligent. We are obliged to realise the consequences of the technology, and not let ourselves give away the task of thinking - the most important activity of human beings - to technologies. Or they may take control of us.     

英語と日本語の、根源的で、文化的背景にも影響された明々白々な違い

最近英文ばかり書いていて気が付いたこと。「日本語と英語の文章は、ただ単に材料（言語）が違うだけでなくて、根本的に、構造が違う。」

最初に何がくるかというのがまず大きな違い。英語ではまず最初に結論が来る。一番伝えたいことが最初に来る。これは、英語文化だと自分の話を最後まで聞いてもらえる保証がない、だから最初に言いたいことを言っておこう、そして相手が聞き続けてくれるのならば、その理由や補助材料などを提供しよう、という考えに基づいていると思う。これに対し、日本語ではまず普遍事実、もしくは理由、補助材料など、サブ的なものが最初に来る。相手が最後まで話を聞くというのは暗黙の了解になっている。そして、いきなり核心に迫るよりも、周りを固めて事実を積み重ねて、最後に、だからこういうことが言えるでしょう？と相手と一緒に結論にたどり着く。このように、日本語と英語の文章構造の違いには、それぞれの文化の違いが非常に大きく影響していると思われる。

続いて、日本語ではよく論理が迷子になるが、英語ではなりにくい。なりにくいも何も、英語では結論がもう示されているのだから、あとはそれを指標に、その後に述べられる内容が結論を補強しているかどうか確認するだけだ。もちろん補強していない場合、その結論には説得力がない。対して、日本語は、事実のみ述べて、述べている間にそれが意味するところを考えていることが多い。つまり、事実観察からその先に進んでいない。それは慌てた結論を出さない注意深さともいえるし、そこから何が言えるかを特別考えていない、場合もあるだろう。ともかくも、ある事実が暗示するものなんていくらでもあるので、人によって受け取り方が違う。つまり、事実を単に伝えるだけでは、それから何が言えるかの結論までは自分の思った通りに相手に伝わらないかもしれない。だから、それから何が言えるのか、結局よくわからない、なんてことも。つまり観察に終始してしまうこともしばしば。「この人、何が言いたいんだろう…？」「ひょっとして、主張したいことなんて特に何もないのかな。じゃあなぜこんなに大人数の時間を取って、演題に立っているんだろう」と思わせられることは、よくある。

このような文化的背景のため、日本語の文章は時として、結論の欠如という根本的な問題を抱えることになる。単に日本語の文章を英語に翻訳すると、非常にまわりくどくわかりにくく（だから不自然）、だから結局何なのかが示されていないことが多い。だから結局何を言いたいのか、その大事な部分を、自分ではなく自分より立場が上の人に決めてもらうというピラミッド型組織も影響しているだろう。また、英語圏のように自分の意見のない人（英語力その他の問題で、表現できない人、ではない。）は重要視されないという文化も薄いので、どこにたどり着くのか分からないスピーチなり文章なりのお供を延々としなければならないときもある。まさに迷路である。しかしそのような文書なり講演なりがまかり通っている！（だって地位があるんだもん、そしてその地位は能力でなくて年数で与えられるものなんだもん…（日本文化の釈明））

しかしこのところはだいぶ、「結論を先に言いましょう」という考えが普及してきたようで、ビジネス書などを見ると忙しい上司に提案をするためには、まず提案を言い、それから理由を言いましょう、ということが書いてある。まったく同意。聞く側に考える余裕、つまりどうとでも解釈できる事象を最初に与えてはいけない。自分が全く意図しない方向に議論を持っていかれる可能性がある。言うことと伝えることは違う、なんていう言葉も聞くが、それは、言い方の問題では？と思う。一意にしか解釈できない言葉でないと、伝達の役割を果たしていることにはならない。幾通りにも解釈の可能な文章は、文学作品であってビジネス文書ではない。

偉そうに書いているが、実のところ、私もよく日本語的な「～～だから○○なんだ」という言い方を英語でしてしまう。英語では、「○○だ、なぜなら～～だから。」という方が一般的だ。一見大差はないように見えるが、例を見ると分かりやすい。

"How is your friend?"　（友達は元気？）の答えとして、
1. "She has two kids." "That's why she's busy." （日本語的な、結論が後に来るタイプ）
2. "She's busy because she has two kids." （英語的な、結論が先に来るタイプ）

この例で、私は1の、 "She has two kids." と答えてしまった。そうすると、相手は、「…だから？元気なの？元気じゃないの？」と思ってしまう。子供が二人いるというのは単なる事実であって、彼女が毎日楽しくてハッピーなのか、疲れているのか、どちらの可能性もある。だから、彼女が元気なのかそうじゃないのかは、話し手が考えて答えるもの。私も、「だから忙しい」と慌てて付け加えた。（これが先の質問に対する本当の答えなのだが）　気をつけていないと、事象だけ述べて結論は相手任せ、といった答えになりかねない、と自省した良い例だった。

分かりやすく、伝わりやすく、率直な表現のために頑張るぞ。。。

社会に出るということ

未だに学生に間違われるのは、垢抜けていないからではなく、若く見えるからってことにしておこう。(まあ、単に博士課程の学生という意味かもしれないわけで、それなら年齢相応だけど)
それにしても、社会人経験者と大学生は雰囲気というか、立ち居振る舞いが全く違う。社会人のほうが大人っぽい。例えば、初対面の人にきちんと挨拶したり、感じよく微笑みながら相槌を打ったり。どんな人とでもとりあえずまともな会話ができる。学生には、それができないというか、し慣れていない人が多い。あくまで傾向論。
学生がそういう訓練をされていないのは頷ける。大学はそんな場ではないし。バイトしてる人はできるのかもしれない。それにしても社会人の大人な態度は、毎日絶対に決まった時間に出勤しなければならない、意に沿わないこともたくさん言ったり、しなければならない、といった甘えの許されない環境で培われたものだと思う。それは学生の置かれた環境よりも厳しい。不思議なもので、厳しい環境で鍛えられるほど、物腰は優しくなる傾向あり。決してスパルタを肯定しているわけではない。しかし、ゆる〜い環境で自分を律するのは難しい(エネルギーを節約したいのは生物の性なのだから)。

とりあえず学生と社会人は違う。学生の頃からそう感じていて、社会人をかっこいいと思っていた。だから早く働きたかった。いま、社会人の立場から学生を見て、やっぱり全然違うなあと思う。率直に。普通の会社員でもそう思うのだから、軍隊にいた人などはもっとその差を感じるだろう。謙虚が一番だ。

それにしてもなんて陳腐なタイトル(^_^;)

電車に乗るとき、いつも電車の左側に座っていることに気づいた(
そしてそれは常に太陽が当たる方角><)。それはひょっとして、体の左側にある心臓を壁側につけて守るため？ 攻撃を繰り出しやすい右手がより自由に動かせるため？ そんな防衛本能かもしれない...!!

Banal platitude

As the way I created to memorise the word "plastic attitude", a platitude may simply be a daily routine, given much less attention than it was hoped to be.

It always reminds me of short prayers. I am not saying that religious believers are repeating their prayers mindlessly. I am talking about what happens when you force a large sum of people to repeat several phrases every single day. It would be just one of the things they do at a particular time of the day, just like brushing teeth or watching news. The intention may have been to familialise people with the idea, but they get too used to it and stop thinking about it. The phrase will just be meaningless, banal platitude. They, themselves, are just having their people do it without much consideration. There are too many things repeated over time without a reason or a purpose, in the pretext of following the tradition. Why is the brainless, empty custom acting so big? Isn't there anyone who thinks? When on earth does that seeking-to-be-the-majority attitude end?

The flaws of democracy - but what else could we have?

Voltaire also says;

The best government is benevolent tyranny tempered by occasional assassination.

The latter part I do not quite agree, but I agree with his implication of the first part. The shortcomings of democracy. If there is such a thing as "benevolent tyranny", that would work the best for the country and people, despite the fact that it would be difficult to oust the ruler without his consent.

What an audacious resident.
I can't believe how come someone can complain about community cleaning plans. It's a scheme for keeping shared places clean, such as parks and ditches. Individual private properties are not included. Yet, someone insisted that it should contain the trench very close to his house. It may be hard to do it by himself, but it's too much to ask to include it in the community's activity. It's not good to take everyone's time for a single beneficiary.

Lake Usa

I knew the existence of the lake/cistern across the road from the company for a long time, but it was my first time to go take a close look at it. It was a calm, beautifully clear lake. The reflection of the mountains far back, and the grass with yellow flowers formed a very nice picture of an autumn twilight.

大麦女子会なるもの

表題の通りの珍妙な会に、性別を理由に呼ばれて参加して来ました...。
競合他社どうしの大麦担当の方々がたまたま全員女性で、じゃあもう皆で研修(という名の旅行？) に行っちゃおう！という流れだったらしい。東京で第一回があり、意気投合したので第二回目。四名の東京レディースは玄関から入る時から既にワイワイきゃーきゃー。華やかムード全開でした。出身地云々というより、タイプが違うという感じ。そりゃあ、職種が全く違うので。

どんな雰囲気なのかさっぱり分からないまま呼ばれた私たちはとりあえず一安心だったけど。むしろ、4人で十分楽しそうじゃないか...私たち研究員2名なんていなくてもよさそうな感じだった。

工場見学から会食までたっぷりの行程だったけど、全て楽しんでいただけて良かった！ カクテルを手作りして好評だった。お酒に強い人ばかりだったので、こちらが圧倒される！

「せっかくだから女子会みたいな会話しようか！」「じゃあ大麦の可愛いところは？」「えー、ふっくらしたところ？」みたいな...（笑） 反応に困るわぁ(笑)。 仕事の話は一切なく、ざっくばらんで気楽な会だった。(ちょっと個性的な)友達と普通にご飯食べてる感じで楽しかった。よく笑ったし、違う分野の人と話すのは刺激になる。

ちょっと思ったけど、世界の首脳が全員女性だったら、争いは減るんじゃないか。変なプライドもないし、領土拡大の野心もないし。世界の女性首脳が一堂に会して女子会したら、多分ひとしきり家族の話題と美味しい食べ物の話をして、子供がいる人は子供の教育や衛生面改善の話なんかもして、「ウチの国の若い人たちにもっと海外経験してほしいの。あなたの国と交流協定しない？」「うちも〜」 みたいな流れで、争っていたのに仲良くなったなんてことが起こりそう。そうだったらいいのになあーー

しごととじかん

メールの返事に一週間もかかるなんて！と思ってしまうのは、私が日本の会社で鍛えられ、即日サービス、終わるまで帰れない方式に染まりすぎたせいだろうか。
いや...ちょっとした事務確認である。別に相対性理論について議論を仕掛けてわけではない。OK! か、No, it's better not to. かのどっちかでしょう。そんなに温めずに、とっとと教えてくれーー

彼らは家での時間を大事にするため、何が何でも定時に帰る。残業代が出ないところも多い。従って、終わらなかった仕事や、定時直前に来たメールなどは次の日に持ち越す。そして次の日にはまた仕事が舞い込み、前日残りの処理をする時間がない...の繰り返しで、処理忘れやミスが出てもおかしくない。

以前本で、「人はなぜか、次の日には今日よりも時間があると思い込んでしまう。明日も今日と同じように雑務に追われることになるとは、想像しないのだ。」とあり、自戒も含め本当にその通りだなと思う。
残業って、やるべきことをやり上げるためには必要だ、が私の結論である。次の日取り掛かろうとして、前日のことを思い出すのに時間がかかるかもしれないし、必要なファイルやデータをまた開くのも面倒だ。その場で終わらせた方が、よっぽど速い。そしてまた新たな課題に全力を注げる。仕事は生モノ、言い得て妙だ。

Gala dinner

The symposium was concluded with a dinner cruise going around Darling Harbour. It was gorgeous!! We went under the bridge, got close to the Opera House and skyscrapers.

There was live rock music by a band. One of the organisers is in the band. He is a terrific singer. It's nice to balance the art and science parts of your brain. Lots of people were dancing to it especially those who grew up with the music. I was upstairs chatting with non-dancers, and it was equally fun. Barley people are so nice, friendly and have good sense of humour. They never stop talking. I'm glad to be one of them.

They told me that I'm the peanut person, meaning someone who represents the company, like the face of it. I don't know why it's peanut, but I'm happy that they recognize me. In fact it sometimes happen that I don't remember meeting someone but that person remembers me. (Ops!) I guess I'm doing an ok job as a self-promoting Shochu girl.

Conference concluded, passed midnight, and nice meeting with them all.

Presentation in Manly

The conference venue was just in front of Manly beach. It was named "Manly"because the first settlers who got to the shore found the indigenous people there very masculine. Quite an interesting story.

The sand was very very fine on the beach. It was so refreshing to walk around there. Some conference attendees were swimming, running and walking in the morning. Every time I come to Australia, it seems people are truly enjoying their life.

My presentation went alright, and so did my boss'. It wasn't an ideal setting on the stage with the computer and the microphone a little too close to me, but it went ok. I could have done a better job, but anyway.. People gave me lots of good comments on it, especially the conference secretary who complimented the tables and figures on my slides. He said his best graphics award goes to me. Yay~~

I found many people prepared slides with too small letters. It seemed they just copied and pasted the tables from their original database, often not of a suitable size for displaying on a big screen. I was in the third row from the front, so how much more to the audience in the back? It's stressful and a huge distraction. Plus, many of them do not practice, it seems. It is understandable that they don't need a script because it's in their native language, but they should rehearse at least once so that they won't mumble and say "erm.." too many times. Preparation affects how effectively you can deliver your message. Besides, a practice will give you an idea how much time your talk will take and how much you will have for Q&A. There were surprisingly many people who exceeded their time slot and couldn't put much emphasis on their conclusions, probably what they wanted to say the most. I didn't count exactly, but it felt like 15% of all presenters exceeded their time, 15% were not too fluent, and 50% had too small letters on their slides. (Overlap possible)

As not a few presenters/researches are like that, it seems relatively easy to stand out if you prepare properly. Another researcher said I was more efficient in carrying out experiments than other Aussies. Yes, I plan a little bit to make the most of my time. I thought it was normal. You haven't got all day. Yet, many laboratory job opportunities are limited to Australian nationality. I would work harder than most of them for sure... It's a protection of local labour force, not a pure competition.

Conference in Sydney

Had a wonderful time in Sydney attending a barley conference at Manly beach, NSW. The weather was just perfect after a mild winter there.

My boss and I visited a distillery close to the airport, called Archie Rose. They had a factory tour showing around their mash tins and pot stills. The person was talking very fast and there were a lot of numbers in his description, so I was asking a lot of questions, which made him ask if we were in the same industry. It seems they can distinguish alcoholic beverage company workers. (Pretty obvious, though!)

We took ferry from Manly wharf to Circular Quay. It was a beautiful ride with a close view of the skyscrapers, Harbour Bridge and Opera House. People were enjoying the breeze on the deck. What a peaceful afternoon.

学会...

秋は学会の季節。
みんなそれぞれいろんなところに学会発表、情報収集に行く。
学会の様子はそれぞれで特色がある。一つの会場だけだったり、7つくらい教室があってそれぞれで発表が同時進行であり、聴きたいものを聞きに行くスタイルだったり。
狭い部屋に多くの人が押し込められた学会もあり。その話をしていたら、
「食事ももう缶詰だったよ」
え、本当に缶詰がお昼ご飯として出されたの？！ ツナとコーンをみんなでかぱっと開けて食べる姿を想像してしまった。
「缶詰になる」という表現。面白すぎる〜〜

「ウィークエンドはパリで」

結婚30周年記念に、新婚旅行先であるパリに戻ってきた夫婦。しかし、家族の問題やら、お金の問題、第二の人生の問題やら…、膝を突き合わせて話さないといけないことは多い。

人生って深い…。

イギリス在住の人のブログでも書いてあったが、欧米では真面目で一途な夫が奔放でワガママな妻に尽くすという構図が多いらしい。なぜ、この人を選んだの…？と思うことも多いとか。本作もそんな場面が結構みられる。日本と反対だなあと思う。その文化はいつから始まったのだろう？不思議だ～

ところで原題は"Le Week-end"で、英語でいうと「The weekend」なのだが、日本語タイトルは「ウィークエンドはパリで」になっていた。いつも思うけれど、日本語タイトルの方が内容を反映した具体的なものになる。「アナと雪の女王」もそうだ。原題"Frozen"（凍りついた）をそのまま訳した邦題だったら、ここまでのヒットにはならなかっただろう。私たちはタイトルから何らかの情報を得ることを期待する。文化の違いだと思う。

PCメガネ

8月を駆け抜けている。
データ揃えと解析と、発表資料作り。一日中パソコンに向かっている。
運動不足で夜眠れなかったりするし、一日中はよくないと思っているのだが…
仕事が全てパソコン関係で、実験が全くないのでしょうがない。

パソコンの画面を朝からずっと見ていると、午後3時くらいから、「もう無理ですー」と、体から拒否反応が出る。心では見ようと思っているのに、もう物理的に、見ていられない。のでそういう時は洗い物しに行ったり、休憩したり、印刷した論文を読んだりして目を休めるのだが…。

という話をしたら、PCメガネなるものがあるということを教えてもらった。隣の部署では既に3人が（視力は悪くないが）愛用している。液晶のブルーライトを低減するらしく、目が疲れないそうだ。なので私も買ってみた。Zoffに行って、既製品（ブルーライト35%カット）を買おうと思ったが、いまいちフィット感が悪い。安物を買って使わなくなるよりは…と思って、思い切ってフレームを選んでブルーライト50%カットのレンズを入れてもらった。そのフレームは、耳に当たるところの部分を自分で曲げて調節できるので、既製品よりはしっくりきた。それに軽い。しかし高い買い物だった…。メガネをかける習慣自体がなく、鼻に当たる部分がものすごくくすぐったいのだが、背に腹は代えられない。
一か月程度で慣れるでしょうとのことだったので、まずは一か月、我慢してみようと思う。

実際今もPCメガネをかけて打っているが、視界全体が黄色味がかっていて、蛍光灯の下にいるみたいで、なかなか良い。電気スタンドの電球色や車のヘッドライトも、LEDの青白く眩しいものよりは、黄色がかったものの方が目に優しい気がするので。

これでメガネになれたら、サングラスももっと快適に長時間かけていられるだろう。慣れが肝心…。。

パスタ屋さんとブルームーン

宇佐にもおしゃれなイタリアンのお店がちらほら出来てきている！！ 11時に行って既に予約でいっぱいだったが、カウンター席で何とか座れた！ 手作りパスタの麺はちょっと平たくて超美味しい...! サーモン+トマトソース+モッツァレラチーズって最強！ 手作りパンも美味しく、大根スープもとても美味しく、大満足...。
こんなお店が増えてほしい☆

あと、7月は一月に2回満月が見られる月だった。31日の満月がそれで、ブルームーンというそうだ。三年に一度しかないんだって！ 3年後、私はどこでブルームーンを見るかなぁ。

もっちー！！

妹の東京土産。実はティッシュケース。最強に可愛い！ 鳥好き姉妹、いやむしろ、鳥好き一家なので...
またインコ飼いたいなーという思いと、うんーでもかわいそうだからねえ...という思いがあって、保留中。。。鳥グッズでしばらくいいかもしれない。動物園で見たりするとかでもいいな。

Thai food

You can find any type of food anywhere in Singapore. Italian, French, Thai, Malay.. But it was interesting that my friends didn't know about Greek food. I was craving for Thai food, so one of them took me to an outdoor Thai restaurant just 5 minutes walk from her apartment. Another one joined us, and said he came here last night. He lives near that place, too. It's easy to find good food in Singapore. Many coffee shops and cafes and desserts are beckoning locals who already filled themselves with a lot of food. It sometimes seem unhealthy to be surrounded by so many restaurants that offer delicious food of a big serving size. It's easy to eat more than you need. Yet Singaporeans are generally skinny and healthy partly because they walk a lot, using public transportation. Chinese herbs may be helping digestion. People also consume more energy to deal with the hot and humid weather, perhaps. Observing the serving size almost as big as they are in the US or Australia, it's interesting to see how people remain fit in this food paradise.

There was a 一風堂 chain shop at the airport. It's surprising that many people like ramen so much. It costs about 1400 yen (!), and doesn't taste as good as in Japan, but it's a popular ramen shop full of customers according to my friends who also like the Japan-born noodles. 

Singapore

A 2.5-day trip to Singapore! I have been there so many times already, but still I get attracted to this small city state. The weather was very hot and humid, reminding me of mid-summer of Japan.

Marina Barrage that prevents flooding in low lands, delicious local food called steamboat, and a day trip to Palau Ubin island were the highlights of the weekend trip.

I thank my Singaporean friends who always welcome me and try their best to have time to show me around, go for dinner etc.

BBQ

An English-Japanese couple threw a BBQ party. They invited their acquaintances, their students, and friends of the guests. There were as many as 32 people in their big house. There was so much food that even 30+ people couldn't finish. I wonder how long it took for the teachers to prepare them. It's a lot of work to host a party!

Their house was in the mountains. There are only 9 households in their village. It was their dream to live in the countryside rich in nature after retiring and grow vegetables and flowers on their farm. I thought life must been inconvenient in an isolated place like this (the nearest supermarket is 40 minutes away!), but they lead a quiet, fulfilling life. Maybe someday when I get older, I may find life in rural area attractive. Maybe...

男前

ある機械の調子がどうも良くなくて、メーカーさんものらりくらりの対応だった。一応対症療法はあったが、機械自体が古くなって更新の時期を迎えたため、サポート体制充実(本当に、すぐ飛んで来てくれる)の他メーカーに買い換えた。

それから1年弱。旧機械のメーカーさんから久しぶりに九州に来る用事があるので寄りますと電話があった。
はっ...。違うメーカーにしたのを言ってなかった。わざわざ言う話でもないかなとも思って、そのままにしていたけど。で、正直に、「他メーカーに買い替えてしまいました」と伝えた。あ、そうなんですかーと言われ、特段気分を害した様子もなかったので「ま、そういう話は会ってからの方が良いですかね」ととりあえずいらしてもらった。

開口一番、「いやー、◯◯さん(私)は男前ですねえ。正面切って買い換えましたと言うんですから」。
時間が無駄になるかもしれないと思って率直に伝えたのが、逆に良かったようだ。「我々も、教えてもらえるのが一番ありがたいですから。」と言ってくださった。その鷹揚さに感謝。

で、旧機械の長所短所、要望、現行他メーカー機械の使い勝手を聞いて帰って行った。商売っ気ないと自分でも言っていたが(確かに)、まあ逆にそういう人の方が好かれるかもしれない。正面から切り込んで、功を奏することは意外に多いと思う。面会して、向かい合っての方が、真意や真摯さが伝わるようだ。

言葉以上に大事なもの

人とのやりとりで思い出したけど、

東南アジアのコーヒーショップ（カフェというよりはフードコートに近い）では、
Kopi oh　コピ、オー、なんとか、などといって注文するらしい。友達に聞いた話。
ohは砂糖入り、を意味する。

で、彼女はアメリカ人で、初めてマレーシアでコーヒーを注文しようとして、
「Oh?」（砂糖入り？）と聞かれ、
「Oh？？？」となり、
店主もまた、「OH???」となり、埒があかなくなったらしい。笑。
Oh, Ohと二人して言いあっている姿を想像するだけで面白い。
結局いろいろと聞いて注文できたようだ。
言葉の違う国に行くと、注文ひとつでも非常に面白い体験ができる。

で、パリに行った時のことを思い出した。地元の人しか行かないような小さなレストランに行ったら、メニューはフランス語のみ、ウェイトレスさんもフランス語しか話さない。メニューは日替わりで決まっていて、前菜＋メインまたはメイン＋デザート、3つ全てもできるようだった（足し算の表記は万国共通！）。

で、前菜＋メインを頼んで、さすがパリ、前菜もメインも、今まで食べたことないくらいの美味しさだった。ウェイトレスさんが来て、何か聞いてくる。当然ながら分からない…。私は料理はどうだったかと聞いているのだと思って（アメリカではたいてい聞いてくる）、「Tres bian!」と言った。ちょっと意外そうな表情を浮かべられた。改めて何か聞かれた。今度はメニューをもって。そこで、デザートを追加するかどうか聞いているんだ！と分かった。その時の恥ずかしさと言ったら。でも彼女はすごく感じが良くて、一緒に微笑んだり戸惑ったり（笑）してくれたので…まあ良かった。私が実に温かな気持ちで店を出たのは言うまでもない。言葉が通じないってすごく不便だけど、その分、お互いを理解するという共通の目標に向かって団結できる気がする。

ツールの問題じゃなくて、意思疎通しようとか、助けてあげたいとか、そういう気持ちの方が大事なんだ。ツールは充実していても、協力し合う姿勢がなかったら、何も起こらない。

大都会の電車と、そこでの人々の関わり

シンガポールにはMRTという公共電車がある。毎回物凄く混んでいる。

人間観察をしてみると、ほぼ、全員が、スマートフォンにかじりつき。

ちょっと、異様な光景と思った。

暇つぶししている（待ち時間を有効活用している）のはわかるけど。
好きで長時間電車に乗っているわけじゃないんだよ、と言われそうだけど。

普段電車に乗らないから、そう思うのだろうか。
東京や大阪ではこんな感じなんだろうか。

動画を見ているか、フェイスブックを見ているか、の人が圧倒的。

フェイスブックをそこまで見てるなんて、友達が欲しいなら、私と話さない？なんて、
言ってみたくなる。オンラインが発達すればするほど、反比例の法則のような感じで
生身の友人関係が難しくなっているような気がしている。

って、私もこうやってパソコンにかじりついているんだけど。。。

でも、こんな大人数の人がいる中で、誰も誰とも目を合わせず、手元の小さな
画面にくぎ付けになっているのには、すごく違和感を感じる。「孤独な群衆」…
かといって、毎日毎日乗っている電車だったら、風景も飽きるだろうし、座れないのが
ストレスだし、待っていても時間は過ぎないしね…。

皆じゃないけど、人と会っているのに、スマートフォンでずっとメッセージをやり取りしている
人もいる。その人の方が大事なら、その人と会ったら？　と言いたくなる。
大事な商談なのかもしれないし、家族に用事があるのかもしれないけど。

ネットワークは張り巡らされたけど、人としての何かが、消えて行っているような気がする。
それは対人力だけじゃなくて、記憶力とか、方向感覚とか、文章力とかも含めて。


明るい話もある。

今日、福岡の地下鉄で、インド系？の人が乗ってきて、「この電車は筑前前原まで行きますか？」と、たまたま入口の近くにいた人に聞いていた（日本語で）。それは手前の姪浜駅で終点の電車だったので、そこで筑前前原方面にいく電車に乗り換える必要がある。会社員風の男性は、路線図を指さしながら、そのことを身振り手振りで説明していた。

日本語が通じる相手でも、日本人と違う外見だったら、非言語の手段で何とかしようとする人が多い、というのは本当らしい。

それはさておき、そのインド系の人は、何か言葉を思い出そうとしていて、「あーー、んーー、『のりかえ』？」　「そう！　ここで乗り換え！」と伝わったようだ。

入口の近くに座っていた女性も、「あ、この路線図を見てね…」と、助けを出してあげていた。優しい。。。じーん。私も、その二人がいなかったら、同じことをしていた。その人、無事に筑前前原までたどり着いたかな。そういうちょっとしたことが、涙がこみ上げるくらいに貴重で温かくて、それだけでいい日になる。

どこに行くにもGPSを頼ってしまいがちだけど、地元の人に聞いてみるのがやっぱり面白い。

（と、なんかシンガポールが冷たい国のような印象を与えるかも？！　
　全然そんなことはなくて、彼らはユーモアあふれる優しい人々。
　「この電車は○○に行きますか？」と聞いたら、マシンガンのような
　速さで答えてくれることだろう。）

綺麗な夕焼け、可愛い小鳥

久しぶりの晴れ間に、夕焼けが水田に鮮やかに映ってまさに水鏡。
川のようにも見える。
風は涼しく、散歩日和。
