We visited Musser Fruit Research Center and Organic Research Center at Clemson University as a post-conference tour. They do a lot of research to tackle fungal diseases because Being near the ocean, farmers in SC face diseases due to high humidity. They mainly work on peaches, but they have persimmons and plums, too. It was inspiring to see such passionate researchers and students!
The vast grounds, the quiet environment, and the leaves falling so abundantly that you could almost hear the onomatopoeia in the text, "Gasp, gasp, gasp"! Ah, how nice to be in nature!
My favorite quote from one of the grad students: "Plants don't eat cookies because they're too dry (good one!); plants need water to absorb nutrients."
学会後の見学ツアーで、クレムゾン大学のマッサー果実研究センターと有機農業研究センターを訪れました。海に近いサウスカロライナ州では、湿度が高いためカビ系の病害が発生しやすい、ので、病害耐性品種の開発が主要なミッション。主に桃を研究していますが、柿やすもももありました。研究に情熱を燃やす研究者や学生と会って、よい刺激になりました！ 広大〜〜〜な敷地に、静かな環境、と思いきや、ガッサガッサ、と文字で擬音が出てきそうなほど豊かな落ち葉。あー、自然っていいな。
ある大学院生の決めゼリフがお気に入り。「植物はクッキーは食べません。植物が栄養を取り込むには、水がまず必要だから。」……日本語で書くとそんなに面白くないのはナゼ？？ (-ω- ?)
