Blick Art Materials

There are so many design and art schools in downtown - and so are art supply stores. It was exciting to visit one of the major art store in NYC. I went to Blick Art Materials, where there were canvas, paints, pens, sketch books, brushes, sprays... many kinds of art materials. One interesting material I found was a kind of paint that stacks up and makes a 3D-kind of art. The blue birds looked really lively, which will be a good decorative item on the wall. It's interesting.

I was pleasantly surprised by the rich assortment of Copic Sketch lineup. BUT one costs $7.99!! If you buy 6, it will be $6.60 each, if 12, $5.24 each. But still.. it will cost a fortune if you want to buy a decent number of markers to be able to color your drawing. It's super expensive!!! I don't know how many people or how often people buy those markers.. 6-marker sets were also displayed, and they were $37.39. Just SIX markers! You can't really do anything with just 6 markers. It's a luxurious item.

However, pigma micron pens were reasonable, $2.79, better than my nearby hobby market. There were many colors and sizes as well, although sepia was all sold out. I tried black, brown and blue. Brush pends were also nice. If a black brush was available, I would have bought one. Sepia is the best color in my opinion, and it was no surprise that all sepia was sold out. Oh well.. I'm happy to get a 0.2 mm pen! I can draw fine lines like hair with this pen now! As I was trying many pigma pens, a few had a damaged tip and not usable. Apparently someone applied too much pressure on that. Those pens are super delicate to even a dexterous and careful artists.. I need to be very careful not to pick those damaged pens to buy.

Generally, everything was expensive. Sketchbooks and notebooks are more than $10 at least. It costs a lot to be an artist. Again, I miss Japanese stationery that are reasonably priced and of high quality.

I also found Faber-Castel Polychromos color pencils, the most prestigious, high-end version of them. I was happy to try them as I've read and heard many good things about them. However... I thought it was kind of oily.. True that it is easy to do the first layer. It goes very smoothly on the paper, but the second layer and onwards, it gets slippery and coated with oil, and the colors do not mix very well, well not as well as I thought they would. Hmm.. is this really what the artist like to use? I wasn't sure. Maybe I don't have the technique to fully utilize them. Or maybe the paper I used wasn't the best. It was a piece of paper to try pens with a normal touch on the drawing side, but it had a wax coating on the back. It shouldn't have made too much of a difference, but I have no way to check. I prefer irojiten to do more layers, which are critical in any coloring, needless to say. So, it's decided that I'm going to get irojiten in June!!! Glad to try Polychromos beforehand. Happy with my visit overall.
