無鄰菴 Murin An garden

無鄰菴にも初めて行ってみた。山縣有朋の別荘。広い庭があって、東山を借景としている。芝がいい！ということで芝を敷いた。が、京都の湿度のため苔も生えてきて、芝生と苔の部分が半々くらい。だそう。琵琶湖から引いてきた小川が流れていて、水音が絶えることがないのも特徴。ゆったりした時間が流れていた。二間＋書斎、坪庭、二階は貸し切りできる広間となっている。これは、ぽけーっと庭を眺めるか、書き物するか、などなどいろんなことに使えそう。

敷地内にある洋館風の建物では、日露戦争を含め、これからの明治の日本の外交をどうしていくか話し合い（無鄰菴会議）がなされた、会議室がそのまま残っている。時の首脳が集い、外交政策に関する重要な議論が行われた場所だとは…。歴史の息吹が肌で感じられた。山縣氏が愛用したロッキングチェアもあり、この時代、贅沢品だっただろう。

My friend and I also visited Murin An for the first time. It is the villa of Aritomo Yamagata. There is a large garden with a borrowed view of Mt. Higashi.  Yamagata was fond of lawn, so they put grass in the garden. But moss has also grown up due to the humidity in Kyoto, and the garden is about half lawn and half moss. A stream from Lake Biwa flows through the garden, and the sound of water never ceases. The time passed leisurely. The house has two rooms plus a study, a tsuboniwa garden, and the second floor is a hall that can be rented out. I can come spend time here for various purposes, such as to gaze at the garden or to write.

In the Western-style building on the site, the conference room where the Meiji-era Japanese diplomacy, including the Russo-Japanese War, was discussed (Murin An Conference), is still there. I had no idea that this was the place where the leaders of the time gathered and had important discussions on foreign policy. I could feel the breath of history. There is also a rocking chair that Mr. Yamagata often used, which must have been a luxury item in those days.
